Roy Wood
Roy Wood (born 8 November 1946) is an English musician and singer-songwriter. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. As a songwriter, he contributed a number of hits to the repertoire of these bands. Altogether he had more than 20 singles in the UK Singles Chart under various guises, including three UK No. 1 hits. The BBC has described Wood as being "responsible for some of the most memorable sounds of the Seventies" and "credited as playing a major role in the glam rock, psychedelic and prog rock movements". In 2008, Wood was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contribution to rock and pop by the University of Derby. In 2015, his long and eclectic career was recognised with the "Outer Limits" award at the Progressive Music Awards in London. Brontosaurus (The Move Song)
"Brontosaurus" is a song by rock group the Move, written, sung and produced by Move guitarist Roy Wood. It reached number 7 in the UK Singles Chart during April 1970, and number 36 in Canada. Release Released as a single early in 1970, it was also included on the band's '' Looking On'' album near the end of that year. With its aggressive guitar riff and growling vocal, the song marked a major shift in sound compared to their previous, more pop-oriented singles, bearing a much closer resemblance to their most recent album, '' Shazam''. This song was the first Move recording made after former Idle Race front man Jeff Lynne had joined, and he contributed guitar and piano. Fire Brigade (song)
"Fire Brigade" is a song written by Roy Wood and performed by The Move. Released as the group's fourth single in Britain in February 1968, it reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart. A cover version was recorded by The Fortunes and released as a single in the US, but did not chart. According to Wood, he wrote the song in a single overnight session after manager Tony Secunda told the band, who had just finished playing a concert, that he had a studio session lined up for the next morning and that they needed to record a single. Since Wood did not have any songs ready that he thought would be a good single, the rest of the Move left him alone in a hotel room (which they normally doubled up on) to write one. The song uses a riff derived from " Somethin' Else" by Eddie Cochran, a work that Wood would continue to reference throughout his career. Ayshea
Ayshea (born Ayshea Hague, 12 November 1948) is a British singer, actor and television presenter. Biography Born in Highgate, London, and educated at Arts Educational School, London, Ayshea was trained in ballet, music, drama and dance. She made her film debut at the age of nine as an uncredited extra in the film, ''Tom Thumb'' (1958). At sixteen, she was signed to her first record label, for the Fontana label, who released her debut single, "Eeny Meeny" in 1965. She made appearances on television shows such as '' Thank Your Lucky Stars'' and ''Discotheque''. Granada TV's producer Muriel Young hired Ayshea to host her own pop show, ''Lift Off with Ayshea'' in 1969. The series ran for 122 episodes lasting until 1974. Jeff Lynne
Jeffrey Lynne (born 30 December 1947) is an English musician, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the co-founder of the rock music, rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), which was formed in 1970. As a songwriter, he has contributed a number of hits to the repertoire of ELO, including "Evil Woman (Electric Light Orchestra song), Evil Woman", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line (song), Telephone Line", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "Hold On Tight (Electric Light Orchestra song), Hold On Tight". Lynne was born in Birmingham and became interested in music during his youth, being heavily inspired by the Beatles. He began his music career in 1963 as a member of the Andicaps, leaving the group a year later to join the Chads. ''Main Street'', credited to Roy Wood & Wizzard (whereas the group's first two albums had been credited simply to Wizzard), is the group's third album. It was initially planned to showcase the more jazz-rock-oriented, deliberately uncommercial side of the group as part of a double album, along with the material that became the 1974 album '' Introducing Eddy & The Falcons''. History When they eventually recorded ''Main Street'' (or ''Wizzo'' as it was originally to be called) in 1975, the group had rather slipped out of the public eye and was on the point of disbanding. Dear Elaine
"Dear Elaine" is a 1972 song written and produced by Roy Wood. It was first released on Wood's July 1973 debut solo album, ''Boulders'', before being issued as a single on 11 August 1973. Wood played all of the musical instruments on the recording, as well as supplying lead and multi-tracked backing vocals. The song was globally published by Essex Music International, Inc. (ASCAP). The track reached number 18 in the UK Singles Chart. The single remained in the UK chart for eight weeks. "Dear Elaine" was a "semi-classical" experimental pop song reminiscent of Pink Floyd and Queen. It featured a slow tempo, with Wood singing with acoustic guitar, French horns and bass, alongside sporadic usage of Wood's multitracked choir. In 1994, Wood stated, "Even though we didn't actually record it as the Move, I had already written "Dear Elaine", which I subsequently put on the Boulders solo album. Curly (song)
"Curly" was a song recorded in 1969 by the English rock group The Move. It was written and produced by Roy Wood. In the 19 July 1969 edition of '' Melody Maker'', Chris Welch said the song was "an obvious success for The Move". The song peaked at number 12 in the UK Singles Chart, and was the last single by the band to feature Carl Wayne before his departure, as well as the first with Rick Price replacing Trevor Burton on bass guitar. The instrumentation is mainly acoustic, and Roy Wood was featured on multi-tracked recorder as well as acoustic guitar and short a cappella harmonies, with the sole electric instrument, a mellotron, appearing only briefly. Wood disliked the song, describing it as "really corny" and saying that he was unhappy with the record label's decision to release it as a single over other songs that he preferred. Chinatown (The Move Song)
"Chinatown" is a song performed by The Move. Released in 1971, the song reached number 23 on the UK Singles Chart. Recorded at the same time as the band's alter-ego Electric Light Orchestra were laying down tracks for their first album. Former Move vocalist Carl Wayne claimed it was his favourite song by the band. '' Record World'' said that the Move "sound ready to move with this artfully crafted side of Anglo-pop." The B-side was a Jeff Lynne-penned song "Down on the Bay". ''Move'' is the debut album by British rock group the Move, released in April 1968 through Regal Zonophone Records. The album features ten Roy Wood compositions, along with three covers which had been a prominent part of the group's live act. Although scheduled for an earlier release, the album was delayed by the theft of the master tapes, which led to the tracks needing to be re-recorded. The album was sporadically recorded between January 1967 and February 1968 at Advision, De Lane Lea and Olympic Studios in London, during gaps in their tight recording schedule when the group were not booked for any performances. Highly anticipated, the album featured two previously released singles: "Flowers in the Rain" and "Fire Brigade", both of which reached the top five in the UK Singles Chart. Cherry Blossom Clinic
"Cherry Blossom Clinic" is a song by British rock band The Move, written by their lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter Roy Wood, intended as the follow up single to their hit " Flowers in the Rain", which reached number two in the '' Record Retailer'' chart. Like many of Wood's other songs, "Cherry Blossom Clinic" deals with clinical insanity and loneliness, and makes several pop culture references throughout, which he largely credits to an ambition for writing a children's book. The track was initially recorded in August 1967 at Advision Studios, but was abandoned for three months before being re-recorded in November of that year, and lacks a production credit.
