It Ain't For You
''It Ain't for You'', The Badlees debut EP, was recorded in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Hoboken, New Jersey, and mixed by Bret Alexander back at Susquehanna Sound in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. It was Alexander's debut as a producer and it featured four, well-crafted, catchy, and energetic songs, each of which could stand alone well as a bar room anthem. Background The Badlees derived from the band Bad Lee White, which put out the album ''What Goes Around'' in 1988. Soon after there were several shifts within the band, including the addition of Pete Palladino as lead vocalist, with the former lead vocalist, Jeff Feltenberger stepping back to provide harmonies and rhythm guitar. On October 10, 1990, the band released the EP, which carried the deceptive title of ''It Ain’t for You''. ''Diamonds in the Coal'' is The Badlees first full-length album, recorded in late 1991 and released in January 1992. It is the first to feature Paul Smith on bass. The album is an entertaining and thoughtful album that split the difference between accessible pop songs and deeper message-oriented folk and roots rock. Background With the addition of Smith on bass, the Badlees quintet that would drive through their most productive years was now intact. The Badlees were now ready to start work on their first full-length album. Dedicated to performing original music, it was now time to expand their library and this would be accomplished in 1991 through the prolific songwriting of Bret Alexander, Mike Naydock, and to a smaller extent, Jeff Feltenberger. The result is ''Diamonds in the Coal'' which, thematically, is nearly sliced in half by the light intermission of "Badlee Rap", performed by rapper Loose Bruce, while doing a session at Waterfront Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey. River Songs
''River Songs'' is the third full length studio album by American band The Badlees. It was released on their independent label, Rite-Off Records, in February 1995 and sold over 10,000 units before being picked up by the national label Polydor/Atlas after the band signed with that label later in 1995. The album was re-released nationally with no further production enhancement in October 1995 and went on to spawn three national hits - "Fear of Falling", "Angeline Is Coming Home", and "Gwendolyn". Background After returning home from China in August 1994, where The Badlees played the Qingdao International Beer Festival, the band headed back to the studio to start on another album. ''Amazing Grace'' is the fourth full length studio album released by American band The Badlees. It was released on their independent label, Rite-Off Records, in April 1999, just as the band was working to get out of their contract with Universal. Background The Badlees recorded their follow-up to the blockbuster River Songs in 1997. The album was called Up There, Down Here and was ready to be published, but the sale of Polygram to Seagram's put all projects on hold indefinitely. Over the final months of 1998 and into 1999, the Badlees played steadily to packed shows in and around Pennsylvania but made little headway with the label that continued to hold them in corporate limbo. ''The Unfortunate Result of Spare Time'' is the second full-length album by Pennsylvania rock band The Badlees. It was approached in a unique way for the early-era recordings of the band. They brought in an outside producer, Jack Pyers (formally of the band Dirty Looks), and they all but abandoned their signature "roots rock" sound that was started on the previous album, ''Diamonds in the Coal'', and would proliferate on their next album, 1995's '' River Songs''. Background The fact that the band remained unsigned to a major label after the release of ''Diamonds in the Coal'' through 1992 was quite a disappointment to Badlees members, some of whom still maintained "day jobs" and were enthusiastic that ''Diamonds'' would push the band over the top and garner some interest from the larger labels.
