This is a list of songs from ''Sesame Street''. It includes the songs are written for used on Sesame Street, the TV series. The songs have a variety of styles, including Rhythm and blues, R&B, opera, Show tune, show tunes, Folk music, folk, and world music. Especially in the earlier decades, parodies and spoofs of popular songs were common, although that has reduced in more recent years. Many famous musicians have sung on the show. Musicians were chosen for their skill and popularity, but also for having a public perception that was compatible with the show's values. For example, musicians who were associated with illegal drugs were not invited to perform. The lyrics of Sesame Street songs had to be wholesome. Fred Wise (songwriter)
Fred Wise (May 27, 1915 – January 18, 1966) was the co-writer of the lyrics to the 1948 song " 'A' — You're Adorable" with Buddy Kaye and Sid Lippman. He subsequently wrote many of the songs sung by Elvis Presley in his movies. Many of his songs were collaborations with Kay Twomey and Ben Weisman, sometimes with additional collaborators. Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ladysmith Black Mambazo are a South African male choral group singing in the local vocal styles of ''isicathamiya'' and '' mbube''. They became known internationally after singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album ''Graceland'', and have won multiple awards, including five Grammy Awards, dedicating their fifth Grammy to the late former President Nelson Mandela. En Vogue is an American vocal girl group whose original lineup consisted of singers Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. Jerry Nelson
Jerry L. Nelson (July 10, 1934 – August 23, 2012) was an American puppeteer, best known for his work with The Muppets. Renowned for his wide range of characters and singing abilities, he performed Muppet characters on ''Sesame Street'', ''The Muppet Show'', '' Fraggle Rock'', and various Muppet movies and specials. Career On ''Sesame Street'', Nelson's longest-running character was Count von Count, the counting vampire who takes delight in counting anything (and everything) he can. Nelson did the voice and puppetry for the Count from 1972 until 2004 and continued to provide the Count's voice until his death in 2012. Caroll Edwin Spinney (December 26, 1933 – December 8, 2019) was an American puppeteer, cartoonist, author, artist and speaker, most famous for playing Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on ''Sesame Street'' from its inception in 1969 until 2018. Big Bird
Big Bird is a Muppet character designed by Jim Henson and built by Kermit Love for the long-running children's television show ''Sesame Street''. An eight-foot two-inch (249 cm) tall bright yellow anthropomorphic bird, he can roller skate, ice skate, dance, swim, sing, write poetry, draw, and ride a unicycle. Despite this wide array of talents, he is prone to frequent misunderstandings, on one occasion even singing the alphabet as one long word (from the song called " ABC-DEF-GHI," pronounced ), pondering what it could mean. Sam Pottle
Samuel H. Pottle (May 8, 1934 – July 4, 1978) was an American composer, conductor, and musical director involved in many theatrical and television productions. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he is perhaps best remembered for his work on ''Sesame Street'' and ''The Muppet Show'', having co-written the iconic theme song by using the music from the song ''Musik, Musik, Musik'' which is used originally in the movie ''Hello Janine!'' with music composed by Peter Kreuder. However, Pottle was also involved with many theatrical productions in the 1960s and 1970s. His principal collaborators were David Axelrod and Tom Whedon, although he also worked with other lyricists. Carol Hall (April 3, 1936 – October 11, 2018) was an American composer and lyricist. She was best known for composing the music and lyrics for the Broadway stage musical ''The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'' (1978, adapted as a film in 1982). Her other works include the Broadway sequel ''The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public'' (1994), as well as the Off-Broadway musical ''To Whom It May Concern'' (c. 1986). Bert & Ernie Sing-Along
''Bert and Ernie Sing Along'' is a ''Sesame Street'' album released in 1975 that involved the entire cast of humans and Muppets doing a sing-along in Bert and Ernie's bathroom. The songs and dialog were recorded exclusively for this album. A year later however elements of this album were re-imaged into a television storyline for the Sesame Street TV program (episode #900). The album was scripted by Joseph A. Bailey and originally conceived as a radio program. Bailey worked on the televised version of the story as well. The album cover is a little misleading as it shows a happy Bert with Ernie at a piano with sheets of music, while Bert, throughout the album, is mostly anything but happy with the situation.
