Myanmar, also known as Burma, has many organisations and societies set up by the government. Although they are loosely termed NGOs, they are partly under the supervision and receive funding from the government. The Myanmar Red Cross, for example, does carry out red cross related duties, but is also considered as a potential reserve force in times of conflict, while the War Veterans' Organisation is a quasi-political society. Myanmar Dental Association
The Myanmar Dental Association ( my, မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ သွားနှင့်ခံတွင်း ဆရာဝန်အသင်း; MDA) is a professional association established in 1979 which has more than 4,000 members. The association publishes ''Myanmar Dental Journal'' every year. It also arranges Myanmar Dental Conference in which FDI World Dental Federation speakers also make their presentations. Myanmar Maternal And Child Welfare Association
The Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association ( my, မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ မိခင်နှင့်ကလေး စောင့်ရှောက်ရေး အသင်း, abbreviated MMCWA) is a non-governmental organisation in Burma which aims to protects mothers and their children in the country. Although it dates back to 1948, it was supported by the Burmese government when it was established in its new centre in April 1991 particularly because the organisation aimed to cover much of the country in protection. As of 2008 the MMCWA now functions with 324 township associations, and 11,233 branch associations formed to undertake health and welfare activities nationwide. It now has over 2,000,000 volunteer workers serving the organisation throughout Burma. Myanmar Medical Association
The Myanmar Medical Association ( my, မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ ဆရာဝန် အသင်း; abbreviated MMA; formerly the Burma Medical Association) is Myanmar's only professional organisation of physicians. Founded in 1949 by Dr. Shwe Thwin, the association has a current membership of approximately 17,000 members (2011). It is administered by a central executive committee and is divided into 33 different societies dedicated to a broad range of medical specialties. Myanmar Red Cross Society
Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) was founded in 1937 and it was earlier called Burma Red Cross. It has its headquarters in Yangon. History In 1920, the Society came into existence as a branch of Indian Red Cross Society. When Burma was politically separated from India in 1937, it attained national status and was recognised as Burma Red Cross Society. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recognised it as a National Society in 1939. The Society was admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1946. The Burma Red Cross Act was enacted in 1959 and amended subsequently in 1964, 1971 and 1988. The 1959 (MRCS) Act confers responsibility to the National Society in implementing humanitarian activities and alleviating human suffering. The Myanmar War Veterans' Organisation ( my, မြန်မာနိုင်ငံစစ်မှုထမ်းဟောင်းအဖွဲ့; abbreviated MWVO) is the official veterans' organisation for military personnel who have retired from the Myanmar Armed Forces (Tatmadaw). The Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association ( my, မြန်မာစာပေနှင့် စာနယ်ဇင်းအဖွဲ့; MWJA) represents writers and journalists in Myanmar. At first closely associated with the Ministry of Information, in the 2011-2012 period the MWJA achieved greater independence. The Union Solidarity and Development Association ( ; abbreviated USDA) was a Burmese political party founded with the active aid of Myanmar's ruling military junta, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), on 15 September 1993. History The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), formed on 29 March 2010, took part in the 2010 elections. All civil servants and members under the age of 25 were purged from the USDA, the remaining members were enrolled into the USDP.
