Sludge Metal
Sludge metal (also known as sludge or sludge doom) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that originated through combining elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is typically harsh and abrasive, often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos. The Melvins from the US state of Washington produced the first sludge metal albums in the mid-late 1980s. Characteristics The key characteristics of both sludge and doom metal are a slow tempo combined with down-tuned, heavily- distorted guitars to deliver the heaviest feel that is possible. The drummer must be able to lead the band through the slow parts of a piece with an accurate time feel, which is much harder to achieve when compared with playing faster pieces. Sludge metal includes sections of the aggression, shouted vocals and occasional fast tempos of hardcore punk. Baroness (band)
Baroness is an American heavy metal band from Savannah, Georgia, whose original members grew up together in Lexington, Virginia. History Formative years (2003–2007) Baroness formed in mid-2003, founded by former members of the punk/metal band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Singer John Dyer Baizley creates the artwork for all Baroness albums, and has done artwork for other bands. Much of their early material was written by John Dyer Baizley and Pete Adams at a music store in Savannah and then later in a small apartment. They recorded 14 hours of two guitars, and Baizley later repurposed this material for Baroness's earliest EP. From 2004 to 2007, Baroness recorded and released three EPs, named ''First'', ''Second'' and ''A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk'' (aka Third), with the third one being a split album with Unpersons. Drone metal or drone doom is a style of heavy metal that melds the slow tempos and heaviness of doom metal with the long-duration tones of drone music. Drone metal is sometimes associated with post-metal or experimental metal. Characteristics Typically, the electric guitar is performed with a large amount of reverb or audio feedback while vocals may or may not be present. Songs often lack beat or rhythm in the traditional sense and are typically very long. The experience of a drone metal performance has been compared by novelist John Wray in ''The New York Times'' to listening to an Indian raga in the middle of an earthquake. Avant-garde metal (also known as avant-metal, experimental metal, and experimental) is a subgenre of heavy metal music loosely defined by use of experimentation and innovative, avant-garde elements, including non-standard and unconventional sounds, instruments, song structures, playing styles, and vocal techniques. is a Japanese band formed in 1992 in Tokyo and composed of drummer Atsuo, guitarist/bassist Takeshi, and guitarist/keyboardist Wata. All three members contribute vocals. Boris has released more than twenty studio albums on various labels around the world, as well as a wide variety of live albums, compilations, EPs, singles, and collaborative albums. Bongzilla is an American stoner metal band that formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 1995. They released their debut extended play, ''Mixed Bag'', the following year through Rhetoric Records. Much of Bongzilla's lyrics are centered around cannabis use and similar themes. Following a six-year hiatus, the band reformed in 2015 and embarked upon a North American tour. Blood Circus (band)
Blood Circus was a short-lived band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1988 that has been described as sludge metal or grunge. Rock journalist Ned Raggett writing in AllMusic describes the band's music as "rough and ready, sludgy guitar rock with a bad attitude". History The band's first release was a single, 1988's "Two Way Street"/"Six Foot Under", on Sub Pop. Both Mudhoney and Nirvana performed their first shows in Seattle opening for Blood Circus at the Vogue in 1988. In 1989 Sub Pop released the band's first and only album, a five-track EP called '' Primal Rock Therapy'' which, despite being now recognised as a milestone record of that time and place, was at the time panned by the critics and ignored by the public. Stoner Rock
Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. This hybrid has traits of both styles, but generally lacks stoner metal's laid back atmosphere and its usage of psychedelia. Black Tusk is an American sludge metal band from Savannah, Georgia, formed in 2005. History The band was formed in 2005, when its members were all living on the same street. With the dissolution of Andrew Fidler's (guitars, vocals) and Jonathan Athon's (bass, vocals) crust punk band and James May's (drums, vocals) street punk band, Fidler and Athon went down the street to May's house and asked him if he wanted to play with them. During the next few days they jammed continuously, and within a few months they had recorded the EP ''When Kingdoms Fall'', which was released via Wrecked Signal. Two years later the band self-released their first full-length studio album, ''The Fallen Kingdom'', followed by another a year later with ''Passage Through Purgatory'', released through the local label Hyperrealist Records.
