Pacific Mail Steamship Company
The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was founded April 18, 1848, as a joint stock company under the laws of the State of New York by a group of New York City merchants. Incorporators included William H. Aspinwall, Edwin Bartlett (American consul at Lima, Peru and also involved with the Panama Railroad Company), Henry Chauncey, Mr. Alsop, G.G. Howland and S.S. Howland. History Founding The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was established to carry US mail on the Pacific leg of a transcontinental route via Panama. The ''City of New York'' was a steam barquentine best known for being Richard E. Byrd's flagship on his 1928–30 exploration of Antarctica, mistakenly for the rescue of Shackleton in 1915, and most infamously for possibly being the ship that failed to come to the aid of the ''Titanic'' in 1912. Her name was changed several times; originally named ''Samson'' (1885–1914), she was renamed the ''Jacobsen'' (1915–1919), and then the ''Belsund'' (1919–1926), and back to ''Samson'' (1926–1928), before being finally dubbed the ''City of New York'' in 1928. Ellerman Lines was a United Kingdom, UK cargo and passenger shipping company that operated from the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. It was founded in the late 19th century, and continued to expand by acquiring smaller shipping lines until it became one of the largest shipping firms in the World. Setbacks occurred through heavy losses to its merchant fleet in the World War I, First and World War II, Second World Wars but were overcome in each case.
