Serres (regional Unit)
Serres ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Σερρών) is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Serres. The total population reaches just over 175,000. Geography The mountains are Orvelos to the north, Menoikio to the east, Pangaio to the southeast, Kerdylio to the southwest, Vertiskos to the west, parts of Krousi to the west and portions of the Kerkini lies to the northwest. The regional unit borders on Thessaloniki to the southwest, Kilkis to the west, North Macedonia with the Novo Selo Municipality to the northwest, the Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria to the north, Drama to the northeast and Kavala to the east. The Strymonian Gulf lies to the south along with the Strymonas delta. Chortero
Chortero ( el, Χορτερό) is a village in the municipality Sintiki, Macedonian region of Greece, 24 km from the city of Serres. As of 2011, Chortero comprises 628 inhabitants, the majority of whom are farmers. Potatoes are the main crop. Ano Vrontou
Ano Vrontou ( el, Άνω Βροντού; bg, Горно Броди, ''Gorno Brodi'') is a remote mountain village and a former community in the northern Serres regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Serres, of which it is a municipal unit. Each year on August astrophotography hobbyists gather there due to the clear view of the night sky, a result of the villages high elevation. The municipal unit has an area of 47.306 km2. In 2011 its population was 199. Ano Vrontou is situated in the northeastern part of the Vrontous mountains, at about 1060 m elevation. It borders on the Drama regional unit to the north and east. Ano Vrontou is 6 km northwest of Kato Vrontou, 12 km east of Achladochori, 13 km northeast of Oreini, 16 km southwest of Kato Nevrokopi and 26 km northeast of Serres. Ano Poroia
Ano Poroia ( el, Άνω Πορόια; rup, Foroi or ; bg, Горни Порой, ''Gorni Poroy'') is a village in Greece, located in Macedonia. The population was 965 people (2011). Geography The village is located 55 km and 30 km respectively to the Northwest of the town of Serres and to the west of Sidirokastro. It is at the foot of the Belles (Belasitsa) at an altitude of 380 m. Lake Kerkini is to the south of Ano Poroia. Name The town of Ano Poroia, (translated as 'Upper Poroia') is known in Aromanian as ''Foroi'' or ''Poroya di-Nsus''. It was known as "Poroj" during Ottoman rule. The modern name of the settlement is in bg, Горни Порой. This is to differentiate it from the 'Lower Poroia' settlement one kilometer to the west. Anatoli, Serres
Anatoli () is a village in the municipality of Sintiki, within the regional section of Serres, at the border with the neighbouring regional section of Kilkis. It was known as Anatolou (Ανατολού) prior to 1927. As a result of the Kallikratis plan of 2010, it belongs to the Anatoli community of the municipality of Sintiki. Prior to this date, it had been in the sub municipality of Kerkini. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 132 inhabitants, the majority of whom have roots in the Greek disapora who came from areas of Pontus. According to the 1928 census, Anatolia is a purely refugee village with 31 refugee families of 108 people. A small river flows from the entrance of the village. The existing school is no longer operating. The Central Church of the village is dedicated to the Prophet Elias. The village is famous for its beautiful square with tall plane trees .
