Senate (France)
The Senate (french: Sénat, ) is the upper house of the French Parliament, with the lower house being the National Assembly, the two houses constituting the legislature of France. The French Senate is made up of 348 senators (''sénateurs'' and ''sénatrices'') elected by part of the country's local councillors (in indirect elections), as well as by representatives of French citizens living abroad. Senators have six-year terms, with half of the seats up for election every three years. Pierre Frogier (born 16 November 1950, Nouméa, New Caledonia) is a French politician, who was President of the Government of New Caledonia from 2001 to 2004. He has been French senator for New Caledonia since 2011, and was member of the National Assembly of France from 1996 to 2011. He served as President of the Congress of New Caledonia from 1995 to 1997. He was born in Nouméa. Hilarion Tumi Vendégou (4 September 1941 – 11 January 2020) was a French politician, the high chief of the Isle of Pines, in New Caledonia, and the mayor of the commune. He was recognised as ''grand chef'' in 1974, but, due to a violent succession dispute with his relative Jean-Marie Vendégou, was not formally enthroned until 7 July 1979. Born in Lifou, France, he represented the island in the French Senate from 1983 until 1992, and was a member of the Rally for the Republic. Henri Lafleur (1902 – 1974) was a New Caledonian politician. A member of the Senate of France from 1959 until 1974, he sat as an Independent Republican. He was elected to the General Assembly in the 1946–47 elections, and was subsequently elected as the New Caledonian member of the Council of the Republic. He did not contest the 1953 elections, but was re-elected to the renamed Territorial Assembly in 1957. He was forced to resign from the Assembly when he was elected to the Senate in 1959, but returned to the island legislature again after being elected in 1962.
