North Tyneside
North Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, England. It forms part of the greater Tyneside conurbation. North Tyneside Council is headquartered at Cobalt Park, Wallsend. North Tyneside is bordered by Newcastle upon Tyne to the west, the North Sea to the east, the River Tyne to the south and Northumberland to the north. Preston, Tyne And Wear
Preston is a suburb about a mile north of North Shields, North Tyneside. Its population was recorded at 8419 in the 2011 census. Historically a separate entity, it has slowly been absorbed into the town to the south and expanded as to form a continuous urban area north to Monkseaton. History of Preston and 'Preston Township' The area derives its name from the old English "Preosta", meaning Priest and "Tun", meaning enclosure or homestead. It is first mentioned in a charter dated between 1106 and 1116 and is recorded in the St. Alban's Register. At about this time the lands of Preston were granted by King Henry I to the monks of St. Oswin at Tynemouth. At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the lands were returned to the Crown. In 1649, the Township was enclosed and of land were divided and granted to various copyhold tenants. John Spence Community High School
John Spence Community High School (formerly Preston High School) is a co-educational secondary school located in Preston (near North Shields) in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a foundation school administered by North Tyneside Council. John Spence Community High School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. George Stephenson High School
George Stephenson High School is a coeducational secondary school located in Killingworth, North Tyneside, England. History Grammar school It was called the George Stephenson Grammar School in 1953, at which time it was built on Benton Lane (the Great Lime Road) in West Moor. (George Stephenson lived nearby in cottagewhen he worked at Killingworth Colliery.) The current school site in Killingworth is a replacement that opened in 1970, and was originally known as Killingworth High School, a comprehensive, but eventually took the George Stephenson name from the old school. The old school no longer exists as it was demolished in 2004. The headmaster since the opening of the old school in 1953 was Tom W. King, BA. He became headmaster of the new school and finally retired around the end of the 1981-1982 school year. Churchill Community College is a mixed secondary school in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. The College teaches students between the ages of 11-18 and is registered to provide SCITT training. Burnside College
Burnside College is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Wallsend, North Tyneside, England. History The school was opened on 15 July 1960 by the chairman of Parsons under the name, Wallsend County Technical School. It cost approximately £280,000 for the building work, the furniture and the equipment. On 3 September 1969, the school was renamed as Burnside High School. The school took its current name when it moved into its new buildings in September 2004 that were later inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II. These new buildings cost around £15 million. In 2009, The Wallsend Sports Centre began moving into the school grounds, and another new building is currently under construction costing £7 million. Wellfield Middle School
Wellfield Middle School is located in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, serving the areas of Wellfield, Earsdon and Monkseaton. In 2015 it had about 360 pupils on its roll from the ages of 9 up to 13. History Prior to 1972, there was a primary school in Wellfield. With Northumberland's creation of a three-tier education system, the school was divided into a First School (South Wellfield First School) and a Middle school (originally called South Wellfield Middle School). In 1993, South Wellfield Middle School and other schools were threatened with closure by North Tyneside Council with a view to reducing surplus places. After a campaign by staff, parents, and pupils to keep the school open, the school successfully applied in 1994 to become one of the few grant-maintained schools in North East England. Wellfield
Wellfield and South Wellfield is a village in Whitley Bay, England, between Monkseaton and Earsdon. It is a residential suburb built between the 1920s and 1950s. The older properties are towards Earsdon, the newer ones closer to Monkseaton. The older, South Wellfield end, had, until relatively recently, a post office, a co-operative store, and a hairdresser's shop, but all are now closed and converted into private dwelling houses. The old Post Office is still identified on local A-Z maps. What is probably the oldest house on the estate stands on the corner of Monkseaton Road, near the junction with Hesleyside Road, its sunken garden being marked as a small quarry in the 1895 "Earsdon, Shiremoor and Backworth" Ordnance Survey map. Shiremoor
Shiremoor is a village in Tyne and Wear, Northern England. It is in the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside and formerly governed under Northumberland. In the 2011 census, it was included in the Tynemouth area of Tyneside. It is near the North East Green Belt, which surrounds Tyneside, Wearside and Durham. It is located around from Whitley Bay. It was built for miners of local colliery pits. The village is made up of smaller areas which were built there in the 20th and 21st centuries.
