Psychedelic Pop
Psychedelic pop (or acid pop) is pop music that contains musical characteristics associated with psychedelic music. Developing in the late 1960s, elements included " trippy" features such as fuzz guitars, tape manipulation, backwards recording, sitars, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, wedded to melodic songs with tight song structures. The style lasted into the early 1970s. It has seen revivals in subsequent decades by neo-psychedelic artists. Characteristics According to AllMusic, psychedelic pop was not too "freaky", but also not very "bubblegum" either. It appropriated the effects associated with straight psychedelic music, applying their innovations to concise pop songs. The music was occasionally confined to the studio, but there existed more organic exceptions whose psychedelia was bright and melodic. The Nova Local
The Nova Local was a psychedelic pop band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1964, initially under the name The Shadows. It was composed of singer Randy Winburn, guitarists Joe Mendyk and Phil Lambeth, bassist Jim Opton, keyboardist Cam Schinhan and drummer Bill Levasseur. Their single "If You Only Had the Time", released in 1967, was a minor hit in North Carolina. They recorded one album, ''Nova 1'' (released on Decca Records in 1968 in the United States), shortly before disbanding. The album was also released in Canada and in the United Kingdom. According to Opton, the album was the first ever recorded using the Dolby NR system. The lines "Is it much too much to ask / Not to hide behind the mask?" from "If You Only Had the Time" are sampled on MF Doom's 2005 song "The Mask". World Of Oz
The World of Oz was an English psychedelic pop band from the 1960s. The band released a self-titled LP record, LP in 1968 and two charting singles, "The Muffin Man" and "King Croesus", before fading into relative obscurity. The album gained wider recognition after it was re-issued on Compact Disc, CD. Career The band formed in January 1968 in Birmingham by Chris Evans and David Reay who recruited David 'Kubie' Kubinec and Tony Clarkson. They were signed to Sparta Florida Music on 13 February 1968, and relocated to London to record with Deram Records. Their song, "The Muffin Man" was released on 3 May 1968, and it was a minor hit in the UK and reached the Top 10 in a number of European countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Underground Sunshine
Underground Sunshine was an American psychedelic rock band from Montello, Wisconsin. The group's only hit single came in 1969 with their cover of The Beatles' " Birthday". In 1969, brothers Berty (vocals, bass) and Frank (drums) Kohl (née Koelbl) and friend Chris Connors (lead guitar) were performing in a group known as The Entrance To Sound. A local DJ by the name of Jonathan Little took an interest in the group and would be responsible for adding his sister, Jane Little (keyboards), to the band. The group scored a hit single with their cover of The Beatles' song "Birthday" which hit #19 on the Cash Box charts and #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was recorded and distributed under the Mercury Records label. The group subsequently appeared on ''American Bandstand'' and released a full-length album, ''Let There Be Light''. Traffic were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in April 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. Traffic Biography.AllMusic. They began as a psychedelic rock group and diversified their sound through the use of instruments such as keyboards (such as the Mellotron and harpsichord), sitar, and various reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music. Strawberry Alarm Clock is a psychedelic rock band formed in 1967 with origins in Glendale, California, a city about ten miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The Spike Drivers
The Spike Drivers was a band from Detroit, Michigan and played from 1965 to 1967. The Spike Drivers began by working in various coffeehouses and clubs in the Detroit, Michigan folk rock music scene. Their music was rooted in folk, blues, and classical music. The band name was suggested by its vocalist Marycarol Brown, originating from a song about John Henry by Mississippi John Hurt called "Spike Driver Blues". The band shared the stage with performers such as Joni Mitchell and Del Shannon. The band traveled to New York City and landed a recording contract with Warner Brothers Reprise Records where they put out two 45's featuring "Strange Mysterious Sounds" with "Break Out The Wine" and "Often I Wonder" with "High Time." The Savage Rose
The Savage Rose is a Danish psychedelic rock group, formed in 1967. Career The band was founded in 1967 by Thomas Koppel, Anders Koppel, Alex Riel, Jens Rugsted, Flemming Ostermann, and singer Annisette Koppel. Ilse Marie Koppel was also participating. Nils Tuxen replaced Flemming Ostermann from their second album. Since the mid-1970s, the group was an acoustic trio consisting of Thomas Koppel, Annisette Koppel (then Hansen) and John Ravn as a core. From the beginning of the 1990s, the group returned to electric instrumentation. Thomas Koppel died on February 25, 2006. After the release of ''Love and Freedom'' in 2012, Savage Rose went on tour, but in Christmas 2013 they were back in the studio recording new songs and re-recording old songs. Sagittarius (band)
Sagittarius was an American sunshine pop studio group formed in 1967, devised by the record producer and songwriter, Gary Usher. History Usher had been involved with music as a songwriter since the early 1960s (including writing lyrics for some of Brian Wilson's earliest songs), and soon branched out into production work. After considerable success as a producer, he eventually became a staff producer for Columbia Records. It was at this position that, during 1967, he produced Chad & Jeremy. They had played him several songs, which he felt lacked any commercial potential. He had heard a demo around that time for a song called "My World Fell Down" (also recorded by the British pop group The Ivy League), and he played it for them, thinking that it was a sure-fire hit. Rotary Connection
Rotary Connection was an American psychedelic soul band, formed in Chicago in 1966. In addition to their own recordings, including their 1967 debut album ''Rotary Connection'', the band is notable as the backing band for Muddy Waters on his 1968 psychedelic blues album ''Electric Mud''. The band's members included Minnie Riperton, who would emerge as a notable solo artist. The Rainy Daze
The Rainy Daze was a psychedelic pop group formed in Denver, Colorado in 1965. They were composed of singer/guitarist Tim Gilbert with his brother Kip on drums, lead guitarist Mac Ferris, bassist Sam Fuller, and keyboardist Bob Heckendorf. The group started as a covers act, nevertheless parlaying a string of frat party gigs into a local television appearance that reportedly caught the attention of famed producer Phil Spector, who extended a management contract.
