Protected areas in Estonia are national parks, nature reserves and landscape protection areas ( nature parks). Estonia has five national parks, 167 nature reserves and 152 landscape conservation areas. In addition, there are 116 (118) protected areas with an old (Soviet-era) protection regulation and 537 parks. In total, 18.1% of Estonia are protected nature areas, with Lääne County having the highest percentage (32%) and Põlva County the lowest percentage of protected areas, about 9%. Ida-Viru County ( et, Ida-Viru maakond or ''Ida-Virumaa'') is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is the most north-eastern part of the country. The county contains large deposits of oil shale - the main mineral mined in Estonia. Oil shale is used in the production of shale oil and in thermal power plants. The capital of the county is the town of Jõhvi which is administratively united with the Jõhvi Parish; nevertheless, Narva is the largest town in the county in terms of population and at the same time the third largest city in Estonia after Tallinn and Tartu. In January 2019 Ida-Viru County had a population of 136,240 – constituting 10.3% of the total population in Estonia. Soomaa National Park
Soomaa National Park ( et, Soomaa rahvuspark) is a national park in south-western Estonia. Soomaa ("land of bogs") protects 390 km², the park was created in 1993. Soomaa is Important Bird Area since 1989 and a Ramsar site of protected wetlands since 1997 and a Natura 2000 area since 2004. Geography The national park, situated in Vahe-Eesti (aka Meso-Estonia), was created in 1993 to protect large raised bogs, flood plain grasslands, paludified forests, and meandering rivers. The territory of the national park is mostly covered with large mires, separated from each other by the rivers of the Pärnu River basin — the Navesti, Halliste, Raudna and Lemmjõgi rivers. Of the raised bogs, the most noteworthy is the Kuresoo Bog, whose steep southern slope, falling into Lemmejõgi, rises by 8 metres over a distance of 100 m. Matsalu National Park (previously Matsalu Nature Reserve, et, Matsalu rahvuspark, often just Matsalu) is a nature reserve and national park situated in Lääne and Pärnu Counties, Estonia. Matsalu National Park spans an area of , comprising Matsalu Bay, the Kasari River delta, the village of Matsalu and surrounding areas. Valgejõe
Valgejõe is a village in Kuusalu Parish, Harju County, in northern Estonia. It is located on the crossing of the Tallinn–Narva road (part of the E20) and the Valgejõgi River. Valgejõe (''white river'') dates from the 13th century, located initially in today's Vanaküla (''old village''). In the early 17th century the centre of the village shifted some kilometers south to the area of Tallinn-Narva road river crossing and the tavern. In north from Vanaküla split Parksi and Nõmmeveski. Situated on the historic division line of Harju and Viru counties the local administrative borders have constantly changed here. Since the 1939 reform however, when the county border skipped a few kilometers eastward, Valgejõe, Vanaküla and Parksi lands were moved between multiple different administrative units, but always together. Kuusalu Parish
Kuusalu Parish ( et, Kuusalu vald) is a rural municipality in northern Estonia, the largest in Harju County. After joining with the adjacent Loksa Parish in 2005, the municipality has now a population of 6,863 (as of 1 January 2009) and covers an area of . The population density is 9.7 inhabitants per km2.
