The Parliament of Jamaica is the legislative branch of the government of Jamaica. It consists of three elements: The Crown (represented by the Governor-General), the appointed Senate and the directly elected House of Representatives. The Senate, the Upper House, is the direct successor of a pre-Independence body known as the "Legislative Council" and comprises 21 senators appointed by the Governor-General: thirteen on the advice of the Prime Minister and eight on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition. The House of Representatives, the Lower House, is made up of 63 (previously 60) Members of Parliament, elected to five-year terms on a first-past-the-post basis in single-seat constituencies. Sir Clifford Clarence Campbell (28 June 189228 September 1991) was a Jamaican educator and politician who served as speaker of the House and President of the Senate. In 1962, after Jamaica achieved independence, he was appointed as the first Jamaica-born and second governor-general of Jamaica, serving in that position for more than a decade. Early life and family Clifford Campbell was born in Petersfield, Jamaica on 28 June 1892, the son of civil servant James Campbell and his wife Blance ( née Ruddock). He was educated at Petersfield Elementary School and Mico Teachers' College. He became a schoolteacher and later was promoted to principal of three schools and headmaster in the parish. Allan George Richard Byfield
Allan George Richard Byfield (14 December 1913 – 30 November 1990) was a Jamaican school teacher and politician. He was a senator of the West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962, and president of the Senate of Jamaica from 1972 to 1980. In the late 1970s he was minister of education. Career Byfield was one of the leaders of the Jones Town Baptist church. He became a prominent educator and politician. He was a schoolmaster at the Trench Town Government School in 1958. When the West Indies Federation was created that year Governor General Lord Hailes appointed two senators from each island apart from Montserrat. Byfield was named by the Jamaican Council of Ministers chaired by Norman Manley. He was one of the senators for Jamaica, the other being Douglas James Judah. Oswald Gaskell Harding (born 3 November 1935) is a Jamaican former Labour Party politician, and the longest-serving senator in the nation's history. He was born in Kingston. Harding was the first person to serve as President of the Senate of Jamaica for two non-consecutive tenures, serving from 1980 to 1984 and from 2007 to 2011. First appointed to the Senate in 1977, he served in the body continuously until 2002, and rejoined the Senate from 2007 until his retirement from politics in 2011. His first period as a senator was the longest continuous tenure in the body's history. Ephraim (; he, ''ʾEp̄rayīm'', in pausa: ''ʾEp̄rāyīm'') was, according to the Book of Genesis, the second son of Joseph ben Jacob and Asenath. Asenath was an Ancient Egyptian woman whom Pharaoh gave to Joseph as wife, and the daughter of Potipherah, a priest of ʾĀwen. Ephraim was born in Egypt before the arrival of the Israelites from Canaan. The Book of Numbers lists three sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah, Beker, and Tahan. Sir Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke (13 November 1915 – 11 July 2014) served as the fourth governor-general of Jamaica from 1 August 1991 to 15 February 2006. Early life Cooke was born on 13 November 1915, in Goodwill, St. James, Jamaica, the son of David Brown Cooke and Mary Jane Minto. In his youth, Cooke was the group scoutmaster and secretary of the St. Andrew Boys' Scout Association and captain of the County of Cornwall cricket team. He attended Mico University College in Kingston and London University in London. A leader in the effort to create a university-based nursing education program, Marshall-Burnett would go on to serve as the head of the nursing education program at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies. Reverend Stanley St John Redwood (born 3 March 1965) is a Jamaican minister and former politician from the People's National Party. He was the 10th President of the Senate of Jamaica, serving from 18 January 2012 to 10 May 2013. A former Moravian minister and the founder of the New Holland Church, Redwood served in leadership positions within several universities before entering politics. Floyd Emerson Morris (born 23 July 1969) is a former Jamaican politician from the People's National Party. He was the 12th President of the Senate of Jamaica. Morris, who began losing his sight during high school and lost it fully six years later, became the first blind member of the Senate when he was appointed in 1998.
