Politics Of Lombardy
The Politics of Lombardy, Italy, takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democracy, whereby the President of the Region is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Legislative power is vested in the Regional Council of Lombardy, while executive power is exercised by the Regional Government led by the President, who is directly elected by the people. The current Statute, which regulates the functioning of the regional institutions, has been in force since 2008. Prior to the rise of Fascism, most of the deputies elected in Lombardy were part of the liberal establishment (see Historical Right, Historical Left and Liberals), which governed Italy for decades. Lombardy was also the birthplace of the Italian Workers' Party, forerunner of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), and its eastern and northern provinces were an early stronghold of the Italian People's Party. Fiorella Ghilardotti
Fiorella Ghiladrotti (25 June 1946 – 13 September 2005) was an Italian Democratic Party of the Left later Democrats of the Left politician and trade unionist who served two terms as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North-West Italy constituency from 1994 to 1999 and again between 1999 and 2004. She was the first female President of the Italian region of Lombardy from 1992 to 1994, was a regional councillor of the Regional Council of Lombardy from 1990 to 1992 and a member of the National Council for Economics and Labour late in her life. Ghiladrotti has a room in the Pirelli Tower; an award; an association and a scholarship named after her. The House of Freedoms ( it, Casa delle Libertà, CdL) was a major centre-right political and electoral alliance in Italy, led by Silvio Berlusconi. 1995 Lombard Regional Election
The 1995 Lombard regional election took place on 23 April 1995. The 6th term of the Regional Council was chosen. For the first time the President of the Region was directly elected by the people, although the election was not yet binding and the President-elect could have been replaced during the term. Roberto Formigoni (member of the right-wing of the Italian People's Party, on the list of Forza Italia) was elected President of the Region, defeating Diego Masi (Segni Pact) and Francesco Speroni (Lega Nord, Northern League).
