This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of New Mexico, sorted by type and name. In 2020, New Mexico had a total summer capacity of 9,098 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 34,076 GWh. The corresponding electrical energy generation mix in 2021 was 35.5% coal, 28.4% natural gas, 30.2% wind, and 5% solar PV. Petroleum, biomass, geothermal and hydroelectric each generated less than a 0.5% share. Small-scale solar including customer-owned photovoltaic panels delivered an additional net 462 GWh to New Mexico's electricity grid in 2021. Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy. Elephant Butte is a city in Sierra County, New Mexico, United States, located near Elephant Butte Reservoir and Elephant Butte Lake State Park. Elephant Butte Dam
Elephant Butte Dam or Elephant Butte Dike, originally Engle Dam, is a concrete gravity dam on the Rio Grande near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The dam impounds Elephant Butte Reservoir, which is used mainly for agriculture but also provides for recreation, hydroelectricity, and flood and sediment control. The construction of the dam has reduced the flow of the Rio Grande to a small stream for most of the year, with water being released only during the summer irrigation season or during times of exceptionally heavy snow melt. Etymology Elephant Butte is an exposed volcanic plug in Sierra County, New Mexico. The sides of the volcano have eroded away and left only the solidified butte-shaped core. It is now an island in the lake except at low-water levels, when it is connected to land by an isthmus. El Vado Lake
El Vado Lake is a reservoir located in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, Rio Arriba County, in northern New Mexico in the southwestern United States. Water is impounded by the earthen dam, earth-filled El Vado Dam, on the Rio Chama (New Mexico), Rio Chama, long and high, completed in 1935. The lake is long and over wide, and lies at an elevation of . The eastern shore of the lake is the El Vado Lake State Park, featuring over 100 camping and picnic sites, and two improved boat ramps. The lake is a destination for salmon and trout fishing, as well as for boating. Unlike nearby Heron Lake (New Mexico), Heron Lake, boat speeds are not restricted. El Vado Dam
El Vado Dam impounds the Rio Chama in the U.S. state of New Mexico, about north-northwest of New Mexico's largest city, Albuquerque and about northwest of the capital city of Santa Fe. The earth-filled structure forms El Vado Lake, a storage reservoir for the Middle Rio Grande Project, and has been designated as a New Mexico Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Construction The El Vado dam was originally built by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District as a storage facility for irrigation water to be used in the Middle Rio Grande Basin. Abiquiu Dam is a dam on the Rio Chama, located about northwest of Santa Fe in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Built and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the dam is an earth embankment structure high and long, containing 11.8 million cubic yards (9,022,000 m3) of fill.
