This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of Kentucky, sorted by type and name. In 2020, Kentucky had a total summer capacity of 17,599 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 63,539 GWh. The corresponding electrical energy generation mix was 68.7% coal, 22.6% natural gas, 7.9% hydroelectric, and 0.5% biomass. The remaining 0.3% was evenly split between solar and petroleum liquids. Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy. For utilities in the electric power industry, it is the stage prior to its delivery (transmission, distribution, etc.) to end users or its storage (using, for example, the pumped-storage method). Somerset, Kentucky
Somerset is a home rule-class city in Pulaski County, Kentucky, United States. The city population was 11,924 according to the 2020 census. It is the seat of Pulaski County. History Somerset was first settled in 1798 by Thomas Hansford and received its name from Somerset County, New Jersey, where some of the early settlers had formerly lived. Somerset became the Pulaski County seat in 1802, and was incorporated as a city in 1887. A Civil War battle was fought in January 1862, at Mill Springs (now "Nancy") about west of Somerset, and a museum is at the site. A smaller battle was fought nearby at Dutton's Hill in 1863. The Tyrone Generating Station was a coal-fired power plant owned and operated by Kentucky Utilities near Versailles, Kentucky. It is located 15 miles west of Lexington, Kentucky. The Shawnee Fossil Plant is a coal-fired power plant owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, located near Paducah, Kentucky. The closest city is Metropolis, Illinois, across the Ohio River to the northeast. The Shawnee Fossil Plant was created with the intentions of providing sufficient electricity to the national defense industry escalating demand for power which could not be met with the Commonwealth of Kentucky's then-current infrastructure. The Paradise Combined Cycle Plant (formerly known as Paradise Fossil Plant) is a natural gas power plant operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Located just east of Drakesboro, Kentucky, it was the highest power capacity power plant in Kentucky. The plant currently has a capacity of 1.02-gigawatts (1,025 MW).
