Wiltshire
Wiltshire (; abbreviated Wilts) is a historic and ceremonial county in South West England with an area of . It is landlocked and borders the counties of Dorset to the southwest, Somerset to the west, Hampshire to the southeast, Gloucestershire to the north, Oxfordshire to the northeast and Berkshire to the east. The county town was originally Wilton, after which the county is named, but Wiltshire Council is now based in the county town of Trowbridge. Within the county's boundary are two unitary authority areas, Wiltshire and Swindon, governed respectively by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. Wiltshire is characterised by its high downland and wide valleys. Allington, North Wiltshire
Allington is a hamlet in north Wiltshire, England. It is on the edge of the market town of Chippenham, about north-west of the town centre and about north of the A420 road towards Bristol. Allington Bar is a farm and small hamlet on the A420. Allington Manor Farmhouse is from the mid 18th century and incorporates fragments of a 17th-century manor house; further fragments are within an 18th-century barn. Bolehyde Manor, a Grade II* listed 17th-century manor house and former home of Camilla Parker-Bowles, is a short distance north of Allington village. This Allington is not a former parish, but was a tithing of the parish of Chippenham. Since 1894 it has been in the civil parish of Chippenham Without. Atworth
Atworth is a village and civil parish in west Wiltshire, England. The village is on the A365 road between Melksham and Box, about northwest of Melksham and northeast of Bradford on Avon. The hamlet of Purlpit lies east of Atworth village, and in the south of the parish are the small village of Great Chalfield and the hamlet of Little Chalfield. The Roman road from Silchester to Bath forms the northern boundary of the parish, and to the south of it is the settlement of Beardwell. History The present-day civil parish of Atworth was created in 1884 from four former parishes or tithings. Atworth Atworth was a tithing in the northeast of the large ancient parish of Bradford on Avon. Ashton Keynes
Ashton Keynes is a village and civil parish in north Wiltshire, England which borders with Gloucestershire. The village is about south of Cirencester and west of Cricklade. At the 2011 census the population of the parish, which includes the hamlet of North End, was 1,400. The village lies within the Cotswold Water Park and is the only settlement substantially on both sides of the River Thames, which has many channels here, centred from its source at Thames Head. History A Romano-British settlement and field system was west of the present-day village, spanning the county boundary; it was investigated in 1971 before it was destroyed by gravel extraction. 'Ashton' comes from the Old English ''Æsctūn'', meaning 'place or settlement where ash trees grew'. Ashton Gifford House
Ashton Gifford House is a Grade II listed country house in the hamlet of Ashton Gifford, part of the civil parish of Codford in the English county of Wiltshire. The house was built during the early 19th century, following the precepts of Georgian architecture, and its estate eventually included all of the hamlet or tithing of Ashton Gifford. The house sits in the Wylye valley, part of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Early history Ashton Gifford is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, listed as land belonging to Humphrey de l'Isle. The land was held by Robert, previously (under King Edward) having been held by Cynewig. Ashton Gifford was a relatively prosperous estate, valued at six pounds (from four pounds in 1066). Ashley, Wiltshire
Ashley is a small village in the civil parish of Box in Wiltshire, England. Its nearest town is Corsham, which lies approximately east from the village. The village is on the A4 which links Bath with Corsham and Chippenham. Ashley Manor is from the 17th century. Box railway station was close to Ashley, where the A4 crosses the Great Western line. Ansty, Wiltshire
Ansty is a small village and civil parish in southwest Wiltshire, England, about east of Shaftesbury. The village is just north of the A30, between Shaftesbury and Salisbury. The parish includes the hamlet of Ansty Coombe. History In the southern part of the parish is White Sheet Hill, on which there are Bronze Age barrows including a long barrow. In the eastern part of the parish there is bowl barrow. The barrow may be older than the pagan Saxon burial from the 7th century AD that has been found in it. Grave goods excavated from the burial include a diadem, palm cups, enamelled ironwork and an incense burner. Domesday Book in 1086 recorded two estates at ''Anestioe'', with altogether 17 households. The village developed in a sheltered valley where springs form a stream which flows north to join the Nadder at Tisbury. Amesbury
Amesbury () is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is known for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is within the parish. The town is claimed to be the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain, having been first settled around 8820 BC. The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and part of Boscombe Down military airfield. Etymology The derivation of the name of the town is uncertain. Alvediston
Alvediston is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about east of Shaftesbury and southwest of Salisbury. The area is the source of the River Ebble and is within the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. History Prehistoric sites in the parish include three Bronze Age bowl barrows on Trow Down and a field system from the same era at Elcombe Down. Much of the land was granted to the nuns of Wilton Abbey in 955. Fragmentary records from Saxon times indicate that the Ebble valley was a thriving area.
