Exeter
Exeter () is a city in Devon, South West England. It is situated on the River Exe, approximately northeast of Plymouth and southwest of Bristol. In Roman Britain, Exeter was established as the base of Legio II Augusta under the personal command of Vespasian. Exeter became a religious centre in the Middle Ages. Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid 11th century, became Anglican in the 16th-century English Reformation. Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade, although by the First World War the city was in decline. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and is now a centre for education, business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall. It is home to two of the constituent campuses of the University of Exeter: Streatham and St Luke's. The administrative area of Exeter has the status of a non-metropolitan district under the administration of the County Council. St Sidwells
St Sidwell's is an area east of Exeter city centre in the ward of Newtown, Exeter, Newtown. Formerly a village in its own right, St Sidwells grew in importance along with Exeter thanks to its location on the main cart track between Exeter and the high ground of Stoke Hill and the rich farmland of East Devon. History The springs of St Sidwell's were tapped by the Roman Empire, Romans for the needs of the city and their water piped via wooden aqueduct (water supply), aqueducts to supply their citadel. This system became the underground passages of the 13th century and was only turned off in 1902. The settlement's current name derives from Saint Sidwell, a devout young girl who was beheaded by her father's farm labourers in fields outside the East gate at a site where a spring was struck and miracles began to occur. Sowton
Sowton is a village and civil parish east of Exeter in East Devon, England. It has a population of 639. Its parish council merged with that of nearby Clyst St Mary in 1976 to form Bishop's Clyst. St Michael's church was rebuilt in 1844–45, by John Hayward and paid for by John Garratt. He retained the original perpendicular northern arcade. It is a rare example of an early Victorian Tractarian village church. It is a grade I listed building. Sowton has an old village centre but serves as a major Exeter suburb, with a large industrial estate, park and ride site and modern housing developments. Sowton is also the name of an industrial estate at . The area is located next to the M5 motorway between junctions 29 and 30, the opposite side from the village and is served by Digby and Sowton railway station. Polsloe
Polsloe is a suburb of the city of Exeter in Devon, England. It lies to the east of the city centre and is served by Polsloe Bridge railway station. The name ''Polsloe'' is derived from ''Poll's marsh'', named after Poll, the owner of land here at the time of the Domesday Book. The Benedictine priory, Polsloe Priory was founded here in around 1159. In 1899 the Exeter Brick and Tile Company built a factory on land that formerly belonged to the priory. The factory was capable of making 100,000 bricks each week, taking advantage of a nearby band of red clay which is particularly well-suited to such use. The main road in this suburb is Polsloe Road which runs north from Heavitree Road to Blackboy Road which leads out to Whipton. Pinhoe
Pinhoe is a former village, manor and ecclesiastical parish, now a suburb on the north eastern outskirts of the City of Exeter in the English county of Devon. The 2001 census recorded a population of 6,108 people resident within Pinhoe Ward, one of 18 wards comprising the City of Exeter. The population increased to 6,454 at the 2011 Census. History Historically Pinhoe formed part of Wonford Hundred. It falls within Aylesbeare Deanery for ecclesiastical purposes. A parish history file is held in Pinhoe Library. Pinhoe is mentioned as 'Pinnoch' in the Great Domesday Book compiled in 1086. There have been several significant archaeological finds in the village over the past 100 years. These have included Roman coins and what is known as 'the Pinhoe hoard' of Bronze Age metalwork found in 1999. Pennsylvania, Devon
Pennsylvania is a suburb situated on the high ground to the north of the city of Exeter in the county of Devon, England. It lies between the ancient deer park of Duryard and Stoke Hill. It was named after the US state by Joseph Sparkes, a Quaker banker who built the first terrace, Pennsylvania Park, in about 1821. Its southern slopes, nearest to the city, include many spacious late Victorian and Edwardian houses, while on the steep higher hills, heading north out of Exeter, the housing is mainly 1920s–1970s, with a few newer estates on the city's extremities. Newtown, Exeter
Newtown is an area of Exeter between St Sidwells and Heavitree and has been an area for the poor since Anglo-Saxons, Saxon times. A workhouse was built in 1671 on a site currently used as a car park, but Newtown remained largely rural up until the 19th century. Around 1700 a new workhouse was built on what is now the site of Heavitree Hospital. Brick and tile making were carried on in Exeter by the Ancient Rome, Romans from clay workings within the city wall. By the 16th century, the rich red clay of Newtown was exploited for brick making, the main brickworks being sited in the location of what is currently the dry ski-slope and golf driving range. Due to the Cholera epidemics of the 1830s the open sewer that ran along the bottom of the hill was covered over, to create Clifton Road.
