Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp quest"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M. Phillips Gold Medal
The Phillips Gold Medal is awarded to the person who, in the opinion of the judges, has contributed the most to British postage stamp design in recent years. The award was established by the distinguished British philatelist Reginald M. Phillips. The medal is three inches wide and made of 22 carat gold. It is retained by the winner. Originally awarded every five years, the medal now appears to be awarded on an irregular basis. National Postal Museum
The National Postal Museum, located opposite Union Station in Washington, D.C., United States, covers large portions of the Postal history of the United States and other countries. It was established through joint agreement between the United States Postal Service and the Smithsonian Institution and opened in 1993. Premises The museum is located across the street from Union Station, in the building that served as the main post office of Washington, D.C. for decades, from its construction in 1914 until 1986. The building was designed by the Graham and Burnham architectural firm, which was led by Ernest Graham following the death of Daniel Burnham in 1912. The headquarters of the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics is based in this building, and there is also space for a data center for the United States Senate. Rowland Hill Awards
The Rowland Hill Awards were established in 1997 as a joint venture between Britain's Royal Mail, the British Philatelic Trust and the Association of British Philatelic Societies. The awards are named after the noted Victorian postal reformer Sir Rowland Hill and were last given in 2006 for 2005 winners. The awards have not been made since then and the scheme appears to be dormant. They are not connected with the Rowland Hill Award given by the ''Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs'' in the United States. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists Of Southern Africa
The Philatelic Federation of South Africa (PFSA) is responsible for inviting philatelists to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of Southern Africa (RDPSA) (originally the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of South Africa). The roll is modelled on the original Roll of Distinguished Philatelists established in Great Britain in 1921, and the first signatory to the South African roll was Gilbert J. Allis in 1932. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists
The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. Luff Award
The Luff Award is awarded by the American Philatelic Society (commonly known as the APS) for meritorious contributions to philately by living philatelists. Established The award was established in 1940 in memory of John N. Luff, distinguished philatelist and president of the APS from 1907 to 1909. Basis of the award The recipient of the award must be a living philatelist. Three Luff Awards are usually presented each year – one each for: * distinguished philatelic research * exceptional contributions to philately * outstanding service to the American Philatelic Society Honorees Luff Awards were presented by the society, starting in 1940 and continuing to this day.
