List Of People On The Postage Stamps Of The Faroe Islands
List of people on the postage stamps of the Faroe Islands reflects people of inportance to the history and society of Faroe Islands. The Postverk Føroya have chosen an issuing policy where stamp designs are relevant to the islands themselves. The Faroese government uses stamps to build a profile of the country's history, culture, nature and economy. The Faroe Isles issued their first stamps on January 30, 1975. As the isles are an independent part of Denmark, Danish stamps were used on the isles previous to this date. From a philatelic point of view, there are earlier events of interest in the postal history of the Faroe Islands, but their first stamps came in 1975. Janus Djurhuus
Jens Hendrik Oliver Djurhuus, called Janus Djurhuus, (26 February 1881, Tórshavn – 1 September 1948, Tórshavn) was the first modern Faroese poet. He and his younger brother Hans Andreas Djurhuus, also a poet, are called the ''Áarstova'' brothers after the house where they grew up. Life and work Djurhuus's parents were Óla Jákup Djurhuus (1832–1909) and Else Marie ''née'' Poulsen, from Hósvík (1847–1897). He was a great-grandson of Jens Christian Djurhuus. Djóni í Geil
Djóni Isaksen (September 12, 1849 – April 20, 1912), also known as Djóni í Geil (), was a Faroese craftsman, editor, and politician. Isaksen was born in Tórshavn. Christian Matras (poet)
Christian Matras (7 December 1900 –16 October 1988) was a Faroese poet and academic. He was the founding professor of the University of the Faroe Islands. He is one of the most important poets in Faroese literature. Life Christian Matras was born in the village Viðareiði, Viðoy, located at far northern end of the Faroe Islands. The surname Matras goes back to an immigrant from France. He attended primary school until he moved to Tórshavn in 1912, where he attended secondary school. He was in a class with Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen and William Heinesen. In 1920, Matras moved to Sorø, Denmark, where he completed his schooling After graduation, Matras studied Scandinavian Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Ruth Smith (artist)
Ruth Smith Nielsen (5 April 1913 in Vágur – 26 May 1958) was a Faroese artist. Smith lived for some years in Denmark, where she was educated as a painter: first. at the Bizzie Højer Art School, and, later, at the Art Academy of Copenhagen. Smith married the architect Poul Morell Nielsen in 1945. They lived in Lemvig, Denmark. Later, with her husband, she moved back to the Faroe Islands; and in the last years of her life she lived in the small village of Nes, which is located on the fjord Vágsfjørður between the villages Vágur, where she was born, and Porkeri. Smith enjoyed swimming in the sea; in 1958, she drowned while swimming in Vágsfjørður. Work Ruth Smith dealt with colours more sensitively than many of her contemporaries. Sverri Patursson (1871–1960) was a Faroese writer, author, and journalist. He was also a translator, ornithologist and environmentalist. Patursson was born in the village of Kirkjubøur on Streymoy, Faroe Islands. He attended Vallekilde Folk High School in Zealand in Denmark.
