Katherine "Katie" A. Boehret (born 1980) works in internal communications for the Devices team at Amazon, an e-commerce and cloud-computing firm. Biography A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Katie Boehret is a graduate of the University of Delaware. In 2010, she was awarded that university's Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement. From 2002 through 2013, Boehret was a journalist and columnist at ''The Wall Street Journal'', where she worked with technology columnist Walter Mossberg. Boehret authored "The Digital Solution" column, which appeared weekly in the newspaper and online. She was also a columnist and editor at the technology web sites All Things Digital and ''Recode'', where she was deputy reviews editor and senior reviewer. Pennsylvania Dutch (, or ), referred to as Pennsylvania German in scholarly literature, is a variety (linguistics), variety of Palatine German language, Palatine German, also known as Palatine Dutch, spoken by the Amish, Old Order Amish, Old Order Mennonite, Old Order Mennonites, Fancy Dutch, and other descendants of Germany, German immigrants in the United States and Canada. There are possibly more than 300,000 native speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch in the United States and Canada. It has traditionally been the dialect of the Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of late 17th- and early to late 18th-century immigrants to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina primarily from Southern Germany and, less so, from the eastern France regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and parts of Switzerland. John Birmelin
John Birmelin (October 31, 1873 – September 3, 1950) has been called the Poet Laureate of the Pennsylvania Dutch and is one of the most popular poets and playwrights in the Pennsylvania German language. Early life Birmelin was born in Longswamp Township, Pennsylvania to a Pennsylvania German mother and a German father, who was a native of Baden, Germany. He studied music at a young age. By the age of 11, he was an organist in the local church where his father was a member of the choir. Career In 1896, he moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1901, he accepted a job as the organist and choirmaster of Allentown's Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, a position he held until his retirement only weeks before his death in 1950. His successor as organist and choirmaster at Sacred Heart was Karl Buesgen, Birmelin's student and noted Pennsylvania impressionist landscape painter. The Beverly Gray Mystery Stories, comprising 26 novels published between 1934 and 1955, were written by Clair Blank whose pen name was Clarissa Mabel Blank Moyer. The series began as a series of school stories, and followed Beverly's progress through college, her various romances, and a career as a reporter before becoming strictly a mystery series. Beverly is portrayed as an extraordinarily determined individual, with "a driving ambition in her heart that would not let her idle her life away."
