São Tomé and Príncipe (; pt, São Tomé e Príncipe (); English: " Saint Thomas and Prince"), officially the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe ( pt, República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe), is a Portuguese-speaking island country in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. José Vianna Da Motta
José Vianna da Motta (modern spelling as 'Viana da Mota') (22 April 18681 June 1948) was a Portuguese pianist, teacher, and composer. He was one of the last pupils of Franz Liszt. The José Vianna da Motta Music Competition was founded in 1957 in his honor. Life José Vianna da Motta was born on São Tomé Island, a Portuguese territory at the time where his father, also a great amateur musician, had opened a pharmacy. Moving with his family to Continental Portugal, he settled in Colares, near Sintra, where he soon showed his unusual skills in music, and in playing and composing works for the piano. In Berlin he had lessons from Xaver Scharwenka and Philipp Scharwenka before studying with Franz Liszt at Weimar in 1885 and with Hans von Bülow two years later. Enezaide do Rosário da Vera Cruz Gomes OIH (born 20 November 1979) is a former Portuguese heptathlete and long jumper. She also competed in 100 metres hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics. At club level, she represented Sporting CP. Biography Naide Gomes started competing under the flag of her birth country São Tomé and Príncipe and represented it at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, though she has lived in Portugal since she was 11 years old. At the Sydney Olympics, Gomes was the São-Tomé flag carrier in the opening ceremony. Before changing nationality she set the current São Tomé and Príncipe records in 100 metres hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin throw and heptathlon. She gained Portuguese citizenship in 2001, and has since represented Portugal at major international events. Sara Pinto Coelho
Sara Pinto Coelho (1913 in Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe – 1990 in Portugal) was a writer of fiction, plays and children's literature in the Portuguese language. She was born in Roça Esperança, a hamlet in the island of Príncipe and was daughter of Manuel dos Santos e Abreu Jr. and Maria Sarah de Lima. She lived the majority of her adulthood in Mozambique where she was a primary school teacher. She wrote theatrical plays for the radio, novels, short stories and children's books. She was director of a theatrical program on Rádio Clube de Moçambique from 1967 to 1972. She later married Judge José Augusto de Vasconcelos Pinto Coelho, native of Mondim de Basto, Casa do Balcão and was mother of the journalist Carlos Pinto Coelho. She died in Praia de Miramar in 1990. Caetano da Costa Alegre (26 April 1864 – 18 April 1890) was a Portuguese poet. Biography Born to a Cape Verdean ''crioulo'' family in the colony of São Tomé in Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe, off the coast of Africa, he settled in Portugal in 1882 and attended medical school in Lisbon, hoping to become a naval doctor, but died of tuberculosis in Alcobaça before he could fulfill his dream. He wrote several reviews under his name including ''A Imprensa'' (1885-1891) and '' A Leitura'' (1894–96), the last one was posthumously published. Publications of his poems In 1916, a friend, journalist Cruz Magalhãez, published the poetry he wrote during the eight years Costa Alegre lived in Portugal.
