South Sumatra ( id, Sumatra Selatan) is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the southeast of the island of Sumatra, The province spans and had a population of 8,467,432 at the 2020 Census. The capital of the province is Palembang. The province borders the provinces of Jambi to the north, Bengkulu to the west and Lampung to the south. The Bangka Strait in the east separates South Sumatra and the island of Bangka, which is part of the Bangka Belitung Islands province. This province is rich in natural resources, such as petroleum, natural gas and coal. The province is inhabited by many different ethnic groups, with Palembang people the largest ethnic group. Most speak Palembang language, which is mutually unintelligible to both Indonesian and local Malay. Other ethnic groups include the Javanese, Sundanese, Minangkabau and Chinese. Great Lady Of Gresik
Shi Daniang (), known as the Great Lady of Gresik or Nyai Gede Pinatih (), was a Chinese-Muslim noblewoman from Palembang during the Majapahit era. She was the daughter of chieftain ''xuanweishi'' Shi Jinqing of Palembang. After her father died, admiral Admiral Zheng He of Ming China decided to make her brother the new chieftain of Palembang, so she left Palembang and went to Gresik in east Java to preach her religion to the natives. Early life Born Shishi Daniangzi (施氏大娘子), she was the eldest daughter of a non-Muslim Chinese business elite, Shi Jinqing, in Palembang. Upon her father's death around 1421, a family feud broke out over the control of the family business between her, her brother and sister. Eventually, Shi Er-Jie, her younger sister won the feud and gained control of the family business. Tantowi Yahya
Tantowi Yahya (born 29 October 1960 in Palembang) is an Indonesian artist, presenter and politician who is a former Ambassador of Indonesia to New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga. He is most famous for hosting the Indonesian version of ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Indonesian game show), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?''. In 2009, Tantowi became member of Indonesian parliament from Golkar Party, representing South Sumatra province. In 2014, he was reelected and this time he represented the capital city, Jakarta. Shi Jin Qing
Shi Jinqing (; Xiao'erjing: , died 1421) was a late 14th century chieftain in Palembang. He was a Muslim whose ancestors were Hui people from Hangzhou. The Ming imperial administration appointed him as chieftain ''xuanweishi'' () of the Palembang district for his contribution in helping Ming admiral Zheng He defeat the pirate leader Chen Zuyi. Shi Jinqing had already been appointed an official civil servant of the Majapahit kingdom of Java, sent to Palembang to serve as a minister after the Majapahit defeated Srivijaya in the year 1377. Children Shi Jinqing had a son Shi Jisun () and a daughter Shi Daniang. The daughter was also known as Nyai Gede Pinatih or the Great Lady of Gresik. Both competed for power after their father died in 1421. Zheng He made Shi Jisun the new chieftain or xuanweishi, and the daughter went to Gresik in East Java to preach Islam. Lahat Regency
Lahat Regency is a regency of South Sumatra (or Sumatra Selatan) province, Indonesia. It covers a total area of 4,361.83 km2 and had a population of 369,974 at the 2010 Census and 430,071 at the 2020 Census. The city of Pagar Alam is an enclave within the regency, but is administratively separate. The administrative centre of Lahat regency is the town of Lahat. Emil Salim
Emil Salim (born in Lahat, South Sumatra, Indonesia, 8 June 1930) is an Indonesian economist and former politician. Born of Minangkabau parents, both from the village of Koto Gadang in West Sumatra. His uncle is Agus Salim, one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Indonesia and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the early 1950s. Salim graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Indonesia in 1959. He obtained a PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and returned to Indonesia to a teaching position at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Indonesia in 1964. He became one of the well-known group of 'Berkeley Mafia' economic advisers, working closely with Professor Widjojo Nitisastro. Alex Noerdin (born 9 September 1950) is a former Governor of South Sumatra between 2008 and 2018. He was born in Palembang, South Sumatra on 9 September 1950. Choo Hoey
Choo Hoey (朱暉, born 20 October 1934, Palembang, Sumatra) is a Singaporean musician and conductor. Choo founded the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and was also its first resident conductor and music director. Choo was awarded Singapore's inaugural Cultural Medallion for music in 1979. Early life and education Choo was born on 20 October 1934 in Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia to father, Choo Seng, a Chinese migrant from Chaojhou, Guangdong, China and his mother from Nanking, Jiangsu, China. Choo's first encounter with classical music started from listening to his father's collection of records and was drawn to the violin.
