Les Barton
Leslie Barton (20 March 1920 – July quarter 2002) was an English professional footballer who played as a full-back. He started his career with Bolton Wanderers, but failed to break into the first team and moved to Football League Third Division North side New Brighton in 1949. Barton spent two years at New Brighton, where he scored one goal in 64 league appearances, before moving to Northern Ireland for a spell with Linfield. Tractor is an English rock band founded in Rochdale, Lancashire by guitarist/vocalist Jim Milne and drummer Steve Clayton in 1971. Both had been members of a beat group, The Way We Live, since 1966. They are notable both for their appreciation by John Peel and Julian Cope, but also for their longevity because as of 2007, they were still performing. The band was produced initially by schoolfriend sound engineer John Brierley. Early history In the early days, the main marketing tool of unsigned hopeful bands was to send demo tapes. Accordingly, a tape was sent by John Brierley to Elektra Records part of the CBS group. Clive Selwood was the CBS UK operations manager and he listened to the tape and liked what he heard. He and his partner DJ John Peel signed the band to their Dandelion Records label. Peel had a fondness for Rochdale, having worked in a cotton mill there before becoming a DJ. Robert Chadwick (Pennsylvania Politician)
Robert M. Chadwick (November 23, 1833 – April 21, 1902) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for Delaware County from 1881 to 1888. Early life Chadwick was born in Rochdale, England to Thomas and Sarah (Crabtree) Chadwick. His family emigrated to the United States in 1847 and settled in Upland, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the public schools of Upland and then learned the wheelwright trade in Frankford, Pennsylvania. He served as a private in Company I of the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (known as the Collis Zouaves) of the Union Army from 1862 to 1865 during the American Civil War. In 1866, he moved to Chester, Pennsylvania and established a wagon factory and blacksmith shop at the corner of Third and Fulton Streets. Richard Cobden
Richard Cobden (3 June 1804 – 2 April 1865) was an English Radical and Liberal politician, manufacturer, and a campaigner for free trade and peace. He was associated with the Anti-Corn Law League and the Cobden–Chevalier Treaty. As a young man, Cobden was a successful commercial traveller who became co-owner of a highly profitable calico printing factory in Sabden but lived in Manchester, a city with which he would become strongly identified. However, he soon found himself more engaged in politics, and his travels convinced him of the virtues of free trade (anti-protection) as the key to better international relations. In 1838, he and John Bright founded the Anti-Corn Law League, aimed at abolishing the unpopular Corn Laws, which protected landowners' interests by levying taxes on imported wheat, thus raising the price of bread. John Bright
John Bright (16 November 1811 – 27 March 1889) was a British Radical and Liberal statesman, one of the greatest orators of his generation and a promoter of free trade policies. A Quaker, Bright is most famous for battling the Corn Laws. In partnership with Richard Cobden, he founded the Anti-Corn Law League, aimed at abolishing the Corn Laws, which raised food prices and protected landowners' interests by levying taxes on imported wheat. The Corn Laws were repealed in 1846. Bright also worked with Cobden in another free trade initiative, the Cobden–Chevalier Treaty of 1860, promoting closer interdependence between Great Britain and the Second French Empire. This campaign was conducted in collaboration with French economist Michel Chevalier, and succeeded despite Parliament's endemic mistrust of the French.
