Digamber Hansda
Digamber Hansda (16 October 193919 November 2020) was an Indian academic and tribal activist who worked for the social and economic advancement of the underprivileged communities in West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. He was a founding member of the Santhal Sahitya Akademi and was considered a pioneer of Santhali language literature. In 2018, Hansda was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, by the President of India for his work in the field of tribal literature and education. Early life Hansda was born in Dobhapani village in Ghatshila, East Singhbhum district (now in Jharkhand) on 16 October 1939. His parents were farmers; from a young age, Hansda helped his parents on the farm. He completed his schooling from Rajdoha Middle School and Manpur High School. Mahavir Nayak
Mahavir Nayak (born 26 March 1942), is a Nagpuri language, nagpuri singer and songwriter. He is an exponent of Theth Nagpuri music, which is a genre of typical Nagpuri music, based on traditional Nagpuri culture#Folk music and dance, Nagpuri folk music. He is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award (2022), Lok Kala Ratna Award (2014) and Praful Samman (2019) for his contribution in folk music. Life Early life He was born in the village of Uruguttu in the Kanke block of Ranchi district on 26 March 1949, on the day of Ramnavami. His father, Khuddu Nayak, was a folk singer. His father was a Mardani Jhumar dancer. He learnt folk music in the arkhra, the village ground. He was getting chances to sing songs in school on Saturday. Chetan Joshi
Chetan Joshi is a noted flautist in the Hindustani Music, Hindustani classical music tradition. He was born in Jharia and brought up at Noamundi and Bokaro Steel City. He was trained under Late Acharya Jagadish (Bokaro), Late Pandit Bholanath Prasanna (Allahabad), Late Pandit Raghunath Seth (Mumbai) and Pandit Ajoy Chakravorty (Kolkata). Jamuna Tudu is an Indian environmental activist. She and five other women prevented illegal felling of trees near her village and this later expanded into an organisation. She is called ‘''Lady Tarzan''’ for taking on the Timber mafias and Naxals in Jharkhand. Kedar Nath Sahoo
Kedar Nath Sahoo was an Indian classical dancer, known as one of the leading exponents of the Seraikella tradition of Chhau dance. He served as the founder director of the ''Government Chhau Dance Centre'' (Chhau Nritya Kala Kendra) of the Government of Jharkhand where he served from 1974 to 1988. During the early stages of his career, he performed with the troupe led by Kumar Bijay Pratap Singh Deo, but later led his own group of dancers for performance in many places in India and abroad including Eastern Europe, South America and Southeast Asia. His students included many notable dancers like Sharon Lowen, Gopal Prasad Dubey and Shashadhar Acharya. He was a recipient of the 1981 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2005, for his contributions to arts. Shyama Charan Pati
Shyama Charan Pati (1940 – 29 October 2020) was an Indian dancer, known as one of the leading exponents of the Seraikala tradition of Chhau, a martial dance form of India. He was a member of the Court of the Central University of Jharkhand. Career He was born in 1940 in a poor Brahmin family in the village of Icha in the Indian state of Jharkhand, and moved to Jamshedpur and trained Kathak and Bharat Natyam under Guru Ban Bihari Acharya. Later, he also trained under gurus such as Panchanan Singh Deo and Tarini Prasad Singh Deo. He trained many students such as Sujata Maheshwari and Sovanabrata Sircar and performed on various stages in India and abroad. Simon Oraon
Simon Oraon Minj, popularly known as the Waterman of Jharkhand in the media and Simon Baba among his villagers, is an Indian environmentalist and social worker, who is known to have worked to combat drought in the state of Jharkhand. His efforts have been reported behind the construction of five irrigation reservoirs as well as an environmental project which included mass tree plantation and digging of wells and ponds in the Bero Block near Ranchi, covering 51 villages. Ram Dayal Munda
Ram Dayal Munda (23 August 1939 – 30 September 2011), known as R. D. Munda, was an Indian scholar and regional music exponent. He was awarded the Padma Shri of the year 2010 for his contribution to the field of art. He was a vice-chancellor of Ranchi University and a member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament. In 2007, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He died in Ranchi on 30 September 2011. Parasu Ram Mishra
Parasu Ram Mishra (died 2001) was an Indian soil conservationist and environmentalist, credited with efforts for the transformation of Sukhomajri, a small village in Chandigarh in the valley of Shivalik Hills. He was the head of the ''Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Institute'' (CSWCRTI) at its Chandigarh centre. He was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri. Mukund Nayak (born 15 October 1949), is an Indian artist. He is a folk singer, songwriter and dancer. Nayak is an exponent of Nagpuri folk dance Jhumar.
