This is a list of people executed in the United States in 2014. Thirty-five people were executed in the United States in 2014. Ten of them were in the state of Missouri, and another ten were in the state of Texas. Two ( Edgar Tamayo Arias and Ramiro Hernandez-Llanas) were foreign nationals from Mexico. One ( Juan Carlos Chavez) was a foreign national from Cuba. Two ( Suzanne Margaret Basso and Lisa Ann Coleman) were female. While there were a total of 35 executions in 2014, there were 39 executions in the previous year (2013) and 28 executions in the subsequent year (2015). Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of Ohio, although all executions have been suspended indefinitely by Governor Mike DeWine until a replacement for lethal injection is chosen by the Ohio General Assembly. Execution Of Dennis McGuire
The execution of Dennis McGuire occurred on January 16, 2014, at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio, in what was considered to be a botched execution. McGuire was executed via lethal injection using a new combination of untried and untested drugs: midazolam and hydromorphone. During the execution, witnesses reported that McGuire could be seen struggling to breathe, and reportedly gasped loudly while making snorting and choking sounds for at least ten minutes. It took over twenty-five minutes for McGuire to die, in a process that should normally take just over eight minutes. The execution led to an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment in Ohio for over three years. McGuire's family filed a civil rights lawsuit against the state and an Illinois drug company. Thomas Knight (murderer)
Thomas Otis Knight (February 4, 1951 – January 7, 2014) was an American fugitive who was executed in Florida for murder. In 1974, Knight murdered a Miami couple after forcing them to withdraw $50,000 USD from a bank. While awaiting trial, Knight and ten other inmates escaped from jail and went on a crime spree, during which he murdered a store clerk in an armed robbery. He was added to the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on December 12, 1974, and was captured on December 31, 1974. Knight was sentenced to death in 1975 for the Miami murders. While on death row, he committed a fourth murder, in which he fatally stabbed a corrections officer. After spending thirty-nine years on death row, Knight was executed on January 7, 2014.
