The Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas, commonly known as the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), is a department of the state government of Texas. The DPS is responsible for statewide law enforcement and driver license administration. The Public Safety Commission oversees the DPS. Michael Lee Lockhart
Michael Lee Lockhart (September 30, 1960 – December 9, 1997) was an American serial killer who received death sentences in three states (Florida, Indiana, and Texas). He was executed on December 9, 1997, by the state of Texas. Arrest and Convictions Lockhart was caught when Officer Paul Hulsey Jr. tried to arrest him for driving a stolen Chevrolet Corvette in Beaumont, Texas. Officers responding to the motel room where he was reported found Hulsey dead in the room. They put out an all-points bulletin for the vehicle, which was spotted. A high speed chase ensued before Lockhart crashed and was soon apprehended. Evidence of his other crimes were found in the vehicle. Lockhart was convicted of killing Officer Hulsey and was sentenced to death. He was later convicted in Indiana for the murder of 16-year-old Windy Gallagher in Griffith, Indiana. Michael Eugene Sharp
Michael Eugene Sharp (April 24, 1954 – November 19, 1997) was an American serial killer who abducted and killed two women and one girl in West Texas in 1982, but is thought to be responsible for at least two further murders. Convicted for two of the killings and sentenced to death for one of them, Sharp was executed in 1997. Crimes Sharp's first known crime dates back to March 1975, when the then-20-year-old broke into the home of a woman, tied her up and stole all the valuables from the home. The victim survived and her testimony led to his identification and arrest only a few days later, with Sharp subsequently being convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for two counts of aggravated robbery and theft by check. Kenneth Edward Gentry
Kenneth Edward Gentry (January 28, 1961 – April 16, 1997) was an American criminal who was executed on April 16, 1997, for the murder of 23-year-old Jimmy Don Ham. The crime occurred in Lewisville, Texas in 1983, technically Pilot Point. Gentry previously escaped from a Georgia prison in July 1982 and was attempting to throw authorities off by assuming Ham's identity. He had been serving ten years in prison for assault before his escape. Before his execution, Gentry issued the following final statement: ''I'd like to thank the Lord for the past 14 years (on death row) to grow as a man and mature enough to accept what's happening here tonight. 1982 Lake Waco Murders
The 1982 Lake Waco Murders refers to the deaths of three teenagers (two females, one male) near Lake Waco in Waco, Texas, in July 1982. The police investigation and criminal trials that followed the murders lasted for more than a decade and resulted in the execution of one man, David Wayne Spence, and life prison sentences for two other men allegedly involved in the crime, Anthony and Gilbert Melendez.
