Various buildings can lay claim to the title of oldest structure in Atlanta. The primary reason that Atlanta does not have an abundance of older structures is that the vast majority of pre-civil war buildings were destroyed in Sherman's March to the Sea, in which General William T. Sherman burned nearly every structure in Atlanta during the Civil War. Thus, those pre-civil war buildings that remain are heavily protected by various government programs and designations due to their scarcity. Perkerson (Atlanta)
The Perkerson neighborhood (formerly called Perkerson Park neighborhood) is located in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia in NPU-X (Neighborhood Planning Unit). The name change was made by request of residents/members of the Perkerson Civic Association (PCA) in order to keep people from confusing the neighborhood with Perkerson Park which is the large park (49 acres) that serves the area. Ansley Park
Ansley Park is an intown residential district in Atlanta, Georgia, located just east of Midtown and west of Piedmont Park. When developed in 1905-1908, it was the first Atlanta suburban neighborhood designed for automobiles, featuring wide, winding roads rather than the grid pattern typical of older streetcar suburbs. Streets were planned like parkways with extensive landscaping, while Winn Park and McClatchey Park are themselves long and narrow, extending deep into the neighborhood. George Washington Collier
George Washington "Wash" Collier (29 November 1813 – 20 June 1903) was one of the first recognised settlers in the Atlanta area. Wash Collier came to the Atlanta area when his father, Meredith Collier, purchased Land Lot 104 in 1822. On that land Meredith Collier built a four-room house. Wash Collier was one of 15 children and he purchased the house and land from his father. Around 1868, Wash Collier built on the site of his father's house a new house, which still stands today in what is now Ansley Park. He was the first postmaster in the area running mail from the fort at Standing Peachtree on the Chattahoochee River. He held on to his undeveloped land lot 104 most of his life which left the northern part of Midtown in a rustic state. Brookhaven, Georgia
Brookhaven is a city in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta that is located in western DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, directly northeast of Atlanta. Peachtree Street is one of several major streets running through the city of Atlanta. Battle Of Peachtree Creek
The Battle of Peachtree Creek was fought in Georgia on July 20, 1864, as part of the Atlanta Campaign in the American Civil War. It was the first major attack by Lt. Gen. Huff House
The Huff House was for decades the oldest house in the city of Atlanta. It was located at the northeast corner of Huff Road and Ellsworth Industrial Avenue. at 1133 Huff Road NW (old numbering, 70 Huff Road NW) in Blandtown, part of what is today West Midtown, overlooking the site of the Battle of Peachtree Creek. It was the family home of Sara Huff, the author of the memoir ''My 80 Years in Atlanta''. Jeremiah Huff built the house of pine and brick in 1854 or 1855 over the remnants of an 1830s log cabin. It was razed in 1954 to make way for the Rushton Toy Factory building. This was covered on the front page of the Atlanta paper at the time.
