Sam Houston
Samuel Houston (, ; March 2, 1793 – July 26, 1863) was an American general and statesman who played an important role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. Born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, Houston and his family migrated to Maryville, Tennessee, when Houston was a teenager. Houston later ran away from home and spent about three years living with the Cherokee, becoming known as Raven. He served under General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812, and after the war, he presided over the removal of many Cherokee from Tennessee. Francis Asbury Morris
Francis Asbury Morris (1817 – 1881) was an attorney general of the Republic of Texas. He subsequently left the practice of law and became a Methodist minister. Morris was born in Ohio in 1817 to Thomas Asbury Morris, later a Methodist bishop, and his wife Abigail Scales Morris. He attended the University of Ohio and graduated from Augusta College. He studied law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1838. The following year he moved to Texas to practice law and was named Attorney General in 1841 at the age of 24. Later that year he went home to visit his sick mother who died in 1842. This event profoundly influenced the young Morris. He decided to change careers and go into the ministry. He became professor of languages at St. Charles College (Missouri) in 1842. He married Mary Fielding in 1845, who was the daughter of the school's late President and a first cousin of Julia Dent, who later married Ulysses S. Grant. Memucan Hunt (1729–1808) was an early American statesman and the first person to hold the position of North Carolina State Treasurer in its current form. Biography Early life Memucan Hunt was born in 1729 in Virginia. Career He moved to Granville County (now Vance), where he became a planter. He owned nearly 16,000 acres (65 km2) of land, 22 slaves, two horses, four mares, 14 head of cattle and 33 hogs. At the age of 41, in 1770, Hunt was chosen Sergeant-at-Arms of the Province of North Carolina House of Burgesses and in 1773 was elected as Representative to the Assembly from Granville County. Branch Tanner Archer (December 13, 1790 – September 22, 1856) was a Texan who served as Commissioner to the United States and Speaker of the House of the Republic of Texas House of Representatives and Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas. Early life Archer was born in Fauquier County, Virginia on December 13, 1790 to Major Peter Field Archer and Frances Tanner. He attended the College of William and Mary and received his medical degree in 1808 from the University of Pennsylvania. Archer married Eloisa Clarke on January 20, 1813; their union produced six children. Archer practiced medicine and was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates representing Powhatan County from 1819–1820. Abner Smith Lipscomb
Abner Smith Lipscomb (February 10, 1789, in Abbeville District, South Carolina – December 8, 1856, in Austin, Texas) was an American and Texan lawyer and judge. He was also appointed Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas under the administration of President Mirabeau B. Lamar. Lipscomb studied law in the office of John C. Calhoun and passed the bar in 1810. In 1811, he began practice in St. Stephens, Alabama (then part of the Mississippi Territory.) He served in the Alabama territorial legislature in 1818 and when Alabama became a state in 1819, he then became a circuit judge, which automatically made him a justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. When chief justice Clement Clay of the Alabama Supreme Court resigned in 1823, Lipscomb was chosen to be the next chief justice.
