The Tropical Albums, ''Billboard'' Tropical Albums chart, published in Billboard (magazine), ''Billboard'' magazine, is a record chart that features Latin music sales information. This data are compiled by Nielsen SoundScan from a sample that includes music stores, as well as music departments at electronics and department stores and verifiable sales from Music venue, concert venues in the United States. The Tropical Albums chart was first of the three Latin-related charts (along with Latin Pop Albums and Regional Mexican Albums) published on June 29, 1985, eight years before the Top Latin Album survey which began on July 10, 1993. The data for this chart was published every two weeks, unlike most ''Billboard'' charts. At the time of the chart's introduction, a softer form of Salsa music, salsa known as salsa romantica had emerged in the mid-1980s. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, commonly known as El Gran Combo, is a Puerto Rican salsa orchestra based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, it was often considered Puerto Rico's most successful musical group. The group received the moniker ''La Universidad de la Salsa'' (The University of Salsa) in Colombia, due to the sheer number of famous salsa musicians and singers who developed their careers with it, who started with the group (particularly Andy Montañez), or who were occasionally backed up by the band and La India. The salsa orchestra was founded in May 1962, by Rafael Ithier. Ithier was still nominally its musical director, and is the only remaining member from the band's original lineup. Tommy Olivencia (May 15, 1938 – September 22, 2006) was a renowned Puerto Rican bandleader of salsa music. Early years Olivencia (birth name: Ángel Tomás Olivencia Pagán) was born in the Villa Palmeras section of Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. His family moved to the city of Arecibo when he was just a child. There received his primary and secondary education. As a young man, he became fascinated with the trumpet and learned to play the musical instrument. In 1954, Olivencia sang and played the trumpet for local bands. He graduated from high school in 1957 and his family relocated once again to Santurce.
