The ''Hillsboro Banner'' is a weekly newspaper published in Hillsboro, North Dakota in the United States. The ''Banner'' is the oldest weekly newspaper in the state of North Dakota. It was first published in 1879 and became the official newspaper of Hillsboro in 1894. The current circulation is around 1,400. The ''Banner'' has repeatedly been recognized by the North Dakota Newspaper Association, and in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2023 was named "Best of the Dakotas" by the North Dakota and South Dakota newspaper associations among midsized weekly newspapers in the two states. Valley City, North Dakota
Valley City is a city in Barnes County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Barnes County. The population was 6,575 during the 2020 census, making it the 12th largest city in North Dakota. Valley City was founded in 1874. Valley City is known for its many bridges over the Sheyenne River, including the Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. These bridges have earned it the distinction of being called the "City of Bridges". The city is also the home of Valley City State University and the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). History Valley City was originally called Worthington, and under the latter name was laid out in 1874 when the railroad was extended to that point. The present name is for the city's location in the valley of the Sheyenne River. A post office was established under the name Worthington in 1874, and has continued to operate under the name Valley City since 1878. Aneta is a city in Nelson County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 234 at the 2020 census. Aneta was first settled in 1882 and incorporated as a city in 1893. History Aneta was first settled in 1882. It was named after ''An''na Ros''eta'' Mitchell, the first woman settler in the community. Because the Sheyenne River flows nearby, the town was nicknamed, "The Queen City of the Upper Sheyenne." In 1896, the Great Northern Railway extended a branch line 28 miles from Hope to Aneta and the city quickly became a boomtown. In 1893, Aneta incorporated as a city, which in North Dakota required a population of 500. At the time, its population was 512. Only 100 residents voted in the election – 59 for, 39 against, and two spoiled votes. A subsequent election for mayor (held in Thayer Hall) resulted in Mayor George F. Thayer.
