Grand Marais, Minnesota
Grand Marais () is a city and the county seat of Cook County, Minnesota, United States, of which it is the only municipality. It is on Lake Superior's North Shore. Grand Marais had a population of 1,337 at the 2020 census. Before it was settled by French Canadians and before Minnesota's statehood, it was inhabited by the Ojibwe. The National Scenic Byway begins in Grand Marais and ends near the border with Ontario. History The Ojibwe name for the area is ''Gichi-biitoobiig'', which means "great duplicate water," "parallel body of water" or "double body of water" (like a bayou), a reference to the two bays that form this large harbor of Lake Superior. Dayton is a city in Hennepin and Wright counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 7,262 at the 2020 census. Dayton is mainly located within Hennepin County, but a part of the city extends into Wright County as well. It is the northernmost city in Hennepin County and is a suburb of the Minneapolis–St. Paul "Twin Cities" metropolitan area. The city of Dayton, platted in 1855, is named for city founder, Lyman Dayton. Fillmore County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,228. Its county seat is Preston. Fillmore County is included in the Rochester metropolitan area. History Fillmore County was created on March 5, 1853. It is named for Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States. Lanesboro, Minnesota
Lanesboro is a city in Fillmore County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 754 at the 2010 census. It was named after F. A. Lane, an early landowner. The South Fork of the Root River flows through it, with a waterfall dam across from Sylvan Park. The Root River State Trail and other bike paths also serve the town. An Amish community is in the area and the town is home to many unique shops and restaurants, and a professional stage theater. History Lanesboro was platted in 1868. Olivia Irvine Dodge
Olivia Irvine Dodge (October 7, 1918 – January 24, 2009) was a philanthropist who, along with her sister Clotilde Irvine Moles, donated the house that is now the Minnesota Governor's Residence. Dodge was a well-known environmentalist, founding the Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul and Mendota Heights, Minnesota in 1967 and the Irvine Nature Center in Baltimore, Maryland in 1975. In the mid-1960s, Olivia could see the properties around her in West St. Paul being sold for development, and knew the natural environment could be lost. She bought up neighboring properties and then formed the nonprofit Dodge Nature Center to keep it as a resource for the public. West Saint Paul, Minnesota
West St. Paul is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 20,615 at the 2020 census. It is immediately south of Saint Paul and immediately west of South St. Paul. History The city's misleading name comes in part from the fact that it lies on the west bank of the predominantly north-to-south Mississippi River. A previous City of West St. Paul, incorporated in the late 19th century, was situated in what is now called Saint Paul's Lower West Side. According to the West 7th/Fort Road foundation, Saint Paul annexed the West Side, and was incorporated for two reasons: "to aid law enforcement—criminals could escape Saint Paul authorities by crossing to the West Side and Dakota County—and to eliminate the Wabasha Street Bridge tolls which were inhibiting development on the West Side." Hackensack is a city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 313 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. History A post office called Hackensack has been in operation since 1888. The city is named after Hackensack, New Jersey. The residents of Hackensack first described their town as the home of Paul Bunyan's sweetheart Lucette in the 1940s, when a sculpture depicting her was placed in City Park. Three Rivers Park District
Three Rivers Park District is a special park district serving the suburban areas of the Twin Cities including suburban Hennepin, Carver, Dakota, Scott, and Ramsey counties. Three Rivers's mission is "To promote environmental stewardship through recreation and education in a natural resources-based park system." Three Rivers operates twenty parks and ten regional trails, with at least two more regional trails planned. Nearly seven million people visit Three Rivers facilities each year.
