Jurby Transport Museum
The Jurby Transport Museum ( gv, Thie Tashtee Arraghey Yurby) is a transport museum in Jurby on the Isle of Man occupying a former aircraft hangar. The museum is operated by a group of volunteers who are members of the Manx Transport Trust. Entrance is free but donations are welcome. The museum receives no public funding and relies on donations to aid its running costs History The museum was prepared by a group of volunteers prior to its opening. The Isle of Man Railway Museum in the village of Port Erin in the Isle of Man is a small museum of the history of the Isle of Man Railway from its founding in 1873 to the present, including the now-closed lines that served Peel, Ramsey and Foxdale, and the remaining line to Port Erin which forms part of the southern terminus. History The museum first opened in 1975 when the Isle of Man Road Services, a subsidiary of the railway company, relocated to their new garage, which still exists today at the foot of the main platform. At that time, the railway operated only between Port Erin and Castletown, in an experimental season with the goal of reducing running costs. The following year, services were extended to Ballasalla, then returned to Douglas in 1977, after which the full line has operated. Niarbyl
250px, View to the south across Niarbyl Bay of the southwest coastline of the Isle of Man and Calf of Man. Niarbyl ( glv, Yn Arbyl), meaning "the tail" in Manx for the way it extends into the Irish Sea, is a rocky promontory on the southwest coast of the Isle of Man between Port Erin and Peel. It is best known for its spectacular sea views which include the Calf of Man and, on clear days, the mountains of Ireland. Its access road branches from the A27 road at Dalby. Niarbyl Bay and its surrounds are considered an asset of the Manx National Heritage, which oversees the area's preservation as well as the Niarbyl Cafe & Visitor Centre. Calf Sound () is a body of water which separates the Calf of Man island from the mainland of the Isle of Man. The sound - technically a strait A strait is an oceanic landform connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. The surface water generally flows at the same elevation on both sides and through the strait in either direction. Most commonly, it is a narrow ocean channe ... - is about 700 yards in width, and contains the small islet of Kitterland, which is home to a large colony of seals. The name ‘calf’ comes from the Old Norse word ‘kalfr’ which means a small island close to a larger one. Ballasalla
Ballasalla () is a village in the parish of Malew in the south-east of the Isle of Man. The village is situated close to the Isle of Man Airport and north-east of the town of Castletown. History Ballasalla grew up around nearby Rushen Abbey. The abbey was originally for monks of the Congregation of Savigny, but later came under Cistercian control. The abbey was an important centre of knowledge and literacy on the Isle of Man and also of economic importance to the local area as it was also the site of a major annual market. After the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII, the abbey was dissolved, fell into disrepair and was eventually ruined. Much of stonework from the original abbey structures were used in the construction of new buildings for the village of Ballasalla in the following centuries.
