The Federated States of Micronesia (; abbreviated FSM) is an island country in Oceania. It consists of four states from west to east, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosraethat are spread across the western Pacific. Together, the states comprise around 607 islands (a combined land area of approximately ) that cover a longitudinal distance of almost just north of the equator. They lie northeast of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, south of Guam and the Marianas, west of Nauru and the Marshall Islands, east of Palau and the Philippines, about north of eastern Australia, 3,400 km (2,133 mi) southeast of Japan, and some southwest of the main islands of the Hawaiian Islands. Kimiuo Aisek Memorial Museum
Kimiuo Aisek Memorial Museum is a museum in Chuuk State, in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is the first museum to be established on the island. Background The museum opened on 13 September 2014 and is located next to the Blue Lagoon Dive Shop in Neauno village, Weno. It is named after Kimiuo Aisek, a diving entrepreneur, who opened the first dive shop in Chuuk. Collections and research The museum's collection focuses on artifacts relating to the Second World War, many of which have been recovered by divers exploring wreck sites. Chuuk Lagoon was the Empire of Japan's main base in the South Pacific. On 17 February 1944, US Forces launched Operation Hailstone which destroyed Japanese merchant ships, light naval cruisers and 265 aircraft. The legacy of the attack made "Truk lagoon the biggest graveyard of ships in the world". It was witnessed by Kimiuo Aisek when he was young. Kosrae State Museum
Kosrae State Museum is a museum in Tofol in Kosrae State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Background Planning for Kosrae State Museum began in 1981. It was founded by Teddy John. Collections Kosrae State Museum is situated in Tofol. Its collection is made up of archaeological assemblages from several of Kosrae's significant historic sites. The collection also includes objects relating to Kosrae's history and culture more widely, including archaeological artefacts. The museum contains models of traditional homes. In 2001 the museum moved to a new location in Tofol. Its redevelopment was funded by the US Government, the FSM Government and Kosrae State. The museum's exhibits include displays on: prehistoric Kosrae, early contact, nineteenth century whaling and missionary activity, the Second World War and contemporary Kosrae. Lidorkini Museum
The Lidorkini Museum was a museum in Kolonia on the island of Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia. History The first iteration of the Lidorkini Museum opened in June 1976, under its former name, Ponape Museum. It closed several years later due to two factors: lack of support from the state and an additional challenge in that local communities did not see the museum as relevant to their lives. The museum and its collections also suffered flood damage. By 1988 the collections were moved into storage by Russel Brulotte, to a building owned by the Department of Lands. The museum re-opened in June 1992. It was established by Pensile Lawrence. In 1994 the museum transferred from the Department of Land of the FSM, to the Department of Education. Kolonia
Kolonia is a coastal town and the capital of Pohnpei State in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It was also the former FSM capital before being replaced by Palikir in 1989, located nearby to the southwest in the municipality of Sokehs. It has 6,074 people. Description Kolonia Town is located in the north central section of Pohnpei Island. It was formerly part of Nett municipality but has been a separate municipality since May 1965. The population of the town was 6,074 (2010 Census). It is the largest population center on Pohnpei and the commercial hub of the island. Yap Living History Museum
Yap Living History Museum is a museum in Colonia, Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is a living history museum which is dedicated to Yapese culture. Background Yap Living History Museum opened on 7 December 2011. Its creation was supported by a €60,000 grant from the French government. The museum was modelled on the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre in New Caledonia. Its creation was organised as a partnership between Yap Visitors Bureau and Yap State Historic Preservation Office. The museum is governed by an advisory board. In 1988 there were doubts over the foundation of the museum, since at the time there were only 1000 tourists visiting Yap each year.
