Fortaleza San Luis
Fortaleza San Luis is located near the Yaque del Norte River in southwest Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. The Fort was the location of several battles during the War of Restoration. Fortaleza San Luis has also served as a Municipal Prison and more recently the fort has been converted into a Museum. History The fort, throughout its history has been vital to the protection and control of the Dominican Republic's second city, Santiago, and by extension the entire Cibao Valley region. After Independence from Haiti and fearing a repeat invasion by Haiti, then president Pedro Santana requested the re-annexation of the Dominican Republic to Spain in March 1861. As such, Spain sent 4 infantries under the command of Colonel Ramon de Portal y Santo Domingo to occupy the fort. Alcázar De Colón
The Alcázar de Colón, or Columbus Alcazar is the first fortified European palace built in the Americas. It is located in the Dominican Republic's colonial area of Santo Domingo city, and forms part of the Ciudad Colonial UNESCO's World Heritage Site. It was built between 1510 and 1514 mostly in a Gothic and Renaissance style. It is the only known residence of a member of the Christopher Columbus family in the New World, his first-born son Diego Columbus, whose children Juana, Isabel, Luis and Christopher were born in the palace. Diego Columbus died in Spain in 1526 but María Álvarez de Toledo, his widow, remained there until her death in 1549. Three generations of the Columbus family inhabited the residence, possibly until the late 16th century. Columbus Lighthouse ( es, Faro a Colón, links=no, meaning "Lighthouse to Columbus") is a Mausoleum, mausoleum monument located in Santo Domingo Este, Dominican Republic, in tribute to Christopher Columbus. Construction began in 1986, using plans drawn in 1931 by Scottish architect Joseph Lea Gleave, J.L. Gleave. The Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress located in the north of Dominican Republic in the province of Puerto Plata. It is also known as ''El Morro'' de San Felipe and was used to protect the City of Puerto Plata from pirates and corsairs. The Memorial Museum of Dominican Resistance ( es, Museo Memorial de la Resistencia Dominicana) is a museum dedicated to the preservation of the history regarding the struggles of several generations of Dominicans during the dictatorship of Rafael L. Trujillo, including its background and its consequences. Museo De Las Casas Reales
The Museo de las Casas Reales (English: ''Museum of the Royal Houses'') is one of the important cultural monuments built during the colonial era in Hispaniola, now the Dominican Republic. It is located in the Colonial district of Santo Domingo. It was the Palace of the Viceroy of Santo Domingo and it is the first (oldest) headquarters of Spanish power in the New World. The building dates back to the sixteenth century, and was built to house the administrative offices of the Spanish colonies in the Americas, at the time any trespassers would be sentenced to death. Many of these forts were incorporated into a defensive wall that surrounded the Ciudad Colonial, effectively creating bastions along the wall.
