Grassano
Grassano is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Matera, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is located between the Bradano and Basento rivers at an elevation ranging from about above sea level. The town proper is from Matera and from the regional capital, Potenza. History Grassano was founded around 1000 AD. The first official document including the town's name is dated 1123, where it is reported as ''castellum quod vocatur Crassanum'' ("castle which is called Crassanum"). In the 15th century, Grassano was officially a rural seat of the Tricarico's Diocese. Grassano's people later asked King Ladislaus of Naples for an independence act, and Grassano has remained an independent village since January 19, 1414. Carlo Levi was arrested and exiled to Grassano because of his anti-fascist activities. In Grassano, Levi painted about 70 pictures and started discovering southern Italy's problems. Pomarico () is a small town of 4500 inhabitants in Southern Italy, in the region Basilicata. It is about from Matera, the capital of the province to which Pomarico belongs. The town was founded about 850 AD by the Byzantines. An old castle was built but only few ruins of it remain. Policoro ( Lucano: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. With some 17,000 inhabitants, is bounded by the towns of Rotondella, Scanzano Jonico and Tursi. Situated on the coast, its population swells in the summertime due to an influx of tourists who come to enjoy the Lido di Policoro. History The ruins of the ancient Heraclea (also Heracleia or Herakleia) are located in the modern comune of Policoro. The city of Heraclea was founded in 434 BC by colonists coming from Taras (present-day Taranto) and Thurii. In very little time, it became richer and more famous than the nearby town Siris. Pisticci ( Metapontino: ; la, Pesticium) is a town comune in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. Pisticci is the fourth most populous town in the region and the most populous in the province after Matera. It is known for being the production site of Amaro Lucano, one of the most famous Italian liqueurs. Saints Peter and Paul Mother Church The church stands on the site of an early church which dated from 1212, retaining its bell tower and two of its stained glass windows. In 1542 it was expanded by the addition of two extra aisles, constructed by Pietro and Antonio Laviola, two brothers who were later accused of murder in Mantua. The church is in the Romanesque-Renaissance style, with an angled roof, and is built in the shape of a Latin cross, with three aisles. Nova Siri is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. Nova Siri is close to the site of the ancient Ionians, Ionian colony of Siris (Magna Graecia), Siris. Montescaglioso (Montese: ) is a town and '' comune'' in the Province of Matera, Basilicata, southern Italy. The economy is mostly based on agriculture, including production of renowned oil and wine, as well as traditional food. Historically, it was the centre of a county in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. History The first settlements in the area date from the 7th century BC, belonging to the Apuli Italic tribe. The original nucleus of Montescaglioso grew substantially in the following centuries, thanks to trade with the nearby Greek town of Metaponto.
