Sliema
Sliema ( mt, Tas-Sliema ) is a town located on the northeast coast of Malta in the Districts of Malta#Northern Harbour District, Northern Harbour District. It is a major residential and commercial area and a centre for shopping, bars, dining, and café life. It is also the most densely populated town on the island. Lining the coastline is a promenade known as the Sliema Front that has become the ideal spot for joggers and walkers as well as a prolific meeting place for locals during the summer season. Romantic moon strolls, barbeques and open air restaurants and cafes have made Sliema the hub of social nightlife. Sliema is also known for its numerous rocky beaches, water sports and hotels. National Inventory Of The Cultural Property Of The Maltese Islands
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) is a heritage register listing the cultural property of Malta. The inventory includes properties such as archaeological sites, fortifications, religious buildings, monuments and other buildings. The NICPMI is under the responsibility of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which was founded in 2002 to replace the Antiquities Act. The NICPMI was established on 16 December 2011. Stella Maris Church, Sliema
The Stella Maris Parish Church is a Roman Catholic parish located in Sliema, Malta. It is the matrice of the other parish churches in Sliema and Gżira being the oldest parish church dating from 1878. History Construction of the church began in 1853 as the population of the small village of Sliema began to grow. The inhabitants of the small hamlet had petitioned the religious authorities for the construction of a larger church to suit their spiritual needs. Permission was granted on condition that the new church was to be dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle. For this purpose the diocese of Malta also donated the land on which the new church was to be built on. However the villagers had a very strong devotion towards Our Lady and wished their main church to be dedicated in honour of their Patroness. Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart Parish Church
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Sliema, Malta was founded in 1877, and has been a parish church since 1918. History The church was built on the initiative of Fr. Paul Vella, between 1877–1881, and six months after its completion in November 1881 it was handed over to the Maltese Province of the Friars Minor. The provincial superior at the time was Fr. Anton M. Cesal, who appointed Fr. Aegidius Portelli as its rector. In 1930 the church was enlarged to handle the increased population. It was built in a Roman-Ionic style, with gilded sculptures and decorative paintings. The dome is decorated with paintings of different Franciscan saints, and the ceiling depicts joyful episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The altar has five paintings by the Maltese artist Giuseppe Calì, one of which is his masterpiece representing St Gerome half naked in the grotto in Bethlehem. The Green House, Sliema
The Green House ( mt, Id-Dar il-Ħadra) was a late 19th-century vernacular townhouse in Sliema, Malta. The historic residence was an icon in the area, situated at the end of St Mary Street of which name of street derives from the niche on the façade of the building. The façade was notably characterized by its dark green colour which had made it a noticeable landmark. The niche of the Assumption of Our Lady, dated to 1875, is listed on the List of monuments in Sliema, National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI). At one point the building was in the parameters of the Urban Conservation Area (UCA), but this status was later retired. The house was demolished in 2019, and there are plans to build thirteen residences above street level and garages below ground in its place. Fort Tigné
Fort Tigné ( mt, Il-Forti Tigné - Il-Fortizza ta' Tigné) is a polygonal fort in Tigné Point, Sliema, Malta. It was built by the Order of Saint John between 1793 and 1795 to protect the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour, and it is one of the oldest polygonal forts in the world. The fort was extensively altered by the British in the 19th century, and it remained in use by the military until 1979. Fort Tigné was restored in the early 21st century, and it is now in good condition. It has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998, as part of the Knights' Fortifications around the Harbours of Malta. Saint Julian's Tower ( mt, Torri ta' San Ġiljan), originally known as ''Torre di San Giuliano'' and also known as Sliema Tower ( mt, Torri tas-Sliema), is a small watchtower in Sliema, Malta. It was completed in 1658 as the fifth of the De Redin towers. An artillery battery was built around the tower in 1715. Today, the tower and the remains of the battery are a restaurant. History Saint Julian's Tower was built in 1658 to protect St. Julian's Bay. It follows the standard design of the De Redin towers, having a square plan with two floors and a turret on the roof. It has Saint George's Tower in its line of sight to the west, and the capital Valletta to its east. In 1715, a semi-circular artillery battery was built around the seaward side of the tower.
