Siġġiewi
Siġġiewi ( mt, Is-Siġġiewi, ), also called by its title Città Ferdinand, is a city and a local council in the Southern Region of Malta. It is the third largest council in Malta by surface area, after Rabat and Mellieħa respectively. It is situated on a plateau, a few kilometres away from Mdina, the ancient capital city of Malta, and away from Valletta, the contemporary capital. It is the home of 8367 inhabitants as of March 2014. Until several decades ago, most of the population was employed in the fields which surround the village. In 1993, the city adopted the motto ''Labore et Virtute'' (Work and Virtue). History In its demographic and topographical formation, Siġġiewi followed a pattern common to other villages in Malta. Before the arrival of the Order of St John in 1530, there were other thriving hamlets in the area. National Inventory Of The Cultural Property Of The Maltese Islands
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) is a heritage register listing the cultural property of Malta. The inventory includes properties such as archaeological sites, fortifications, religious buildings, monuments and other buildings. The NICPMI is under the responsibility of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which was founded in 2002 to replace the Antiquities Act. The NICPMI was established on 16 December 2011. Ä onna Tal-Kmand
The ''Ä onna tal-Kmand'' (), formerly known as ''Ä onna tal-Kutnent'' () and sometimes known as ''Ball Gardens'', are a group of gardens in various localities in Malta, which were built in the early years of the 19th century when the island was a British protectorate. The gardens were commissioned by Civil Commissioner Alexander Ball between 1802 and 1805, and were given to the ''Luogotenenti'' in charge of the towns or villages. A total of 21 gardens were established. About half of these were destroyed in the 20th century, while the others have survived in various states of maintenance. Well-preserved gardens include those at Gudja, Għargħur, Qrendi and Å»ejtun. History Sir Alexander Ball was Civil Commissioner of Malta from 1799 to 1801, and again from 1802 until his death in 1809. Girgenti Palace
Girgenti Palace ( mt, Palazz tal-Girgenti) is a palace near Siġġiewi, Malta. It was built in 1625 as the summer residence of Malta's inquisitor, and is therefore also known as the Inquisitor's Palace ( mt, Palazz tal-Inkwiżitur). It is now an official residence of the Prime Minister of Malta. History Girgenti Palace was built in 1625 as the summer residence of Inquisitor Onorato Visconti, on a strip of land confiscated from Matteo Falzon ( mt, Matti Falzun), who had been condemned as a heretic. Falzon was not accused alone as also Cleric Wenzu Falzon had been accused with him of witchcraft. Wenzu self-exiled in France where he continued a life against church teaching and Matteo went into hiding in Sicily. Both were sentenced in absentia by the inquisition with representative ‘corps’. Armoury (Siġġiewi)
The Armoury ( mt, L-Armerija), also known as the Old Fortified House ( mt, Id-Dar il-Fortifikata l-Antika), is a historic building in Siġġiewi, Malta, which was originally used as the residence of captain of the village, and it also served as an arsenal where the weapons of the local militia were stored. The last Grand Master of Malta was hosted in the building by the captain during the feast of the village. After the departure of the Order the building was adaptively reused according to the exigencies of the village or governor but lost its original purpose. It was used as a temporal school in the village, being among the first public education buildings, before being vacated. Church Of St Nicholas, Siġġiewi
The Church of St Nicholas is the Roman Catholic parish church of Siġġiewi, Malta, dedicated to Nicholas of Bari. It was built in the late 17th century and it took over the function of an older parish church which was located elsewhere in the village and which now lies in ruins. Original church Siġġiewi was listed as one of Malta's first parishes by Bishop Senatore de Mello in his ''rollo'' of 1436. The old parish church was located in another part of the village, and it was built and enlarged gradually between the 15th and early 17th centuries. The building was abandoned and partially demolished after the present parish church was built, but some ruins still stand and they were classified as a heritage site in 1998 and were restored in 2007. Laferla Cross
The Laferla Cross ( mt, is-Salib tal-Għolja) is an early 20th-century religious landmark on the outskirts of Siggiewi, in Malta. It is situated on a hill close to the Chapel of the Annunciation and the Cemetery of Saint Theodore. History The original Laferla Cross was built under the supervision of Ä anni Mercieca in 1903. It was named after Fr. Paul Laferla, who proposed its construction as a memorial of the Holy Year. A year after its construction, the cross was blessed by the Archbishop and an art painting of Our Lady of Sorrows was placed within the shrine. The cross was restored on number of times generally due to damage and degradation but it has at times collapsed. The 1903 Laferla Cross was replaced with a 1963 Italian replica reinforced in bronze and iron. Threatened by erosion and in danger of collapse the cross was restored by locals craftsmen in 1984. St Blaise's Chapel, Siġġiewi
St Blaise's Chapel is a wayside chapel located in the countryside between the villages of Siġġiewi and Rabat. The chapel is governed by the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Paul in Mdina. Origins The first chapel on the site was built in the late Middle Ages in 1430. Unlike most churches in Malta, this chapel was not mentioned in inquisitor Pietro Dusina's report of 1575 during his apostolic visit to Malta. This may be because the chapel had been destroyed by that time; however, it was mentioned that a certain Canon Treasurer of the cathedral had the Prebendary of St Blaise. The present chapel was built in 1691 through the initiatives of the Reverend Canon Antonio Manso who at that time had the Prebendary of St Blaise. A plaque inside the chapel mentions the event of the reconstruction and mentions the bishop of Malta Davide Cocco Palmieri and the Grand Master Gregorio Carafa.
