Santa Venera
Santa Venera is a town in the Central Region of Malta, with a population of 8,834 (2021). It is located between the towns of Birkirkara and Ħamrun, and it also borders Qormi and Msida. History The Old Church of Santa Venera was built in 1473, and it was enlarged in 1500, rebuilt between 1658 and 1688 and again in the 19th century. This church remained as the parish church until 1989. A new church was blessed in 2005. In 1610, Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt financed the building of the Wignacourt Aqueduct to transport water from springs in Rabat and Dingli to the capital Valletta, passing through various towns along the way including Santa Venera. The Aqueduct was finished in 1615, and an ornamental gateway was built where it crossed the road between what is now Fleur-de-Lys and Santa Venera. National Inventory Of The Cultural Property Of The Maltese Islands
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) is a heritage register listing the cultural property of Malta. The inventory includes properties such as archaeological sites, fortifications, religious buildings, monuments and other buildings. The NICPMI is under the responsibility of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which was founded in 2002 to replace the Antiquities Act. The NICPMI was established on 16 December 2011. Santa Venera Parish Church
The Santa Venera Parish Church ( mt, Knisja Parrokkjali ta' Santa Venera) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Santa Venera, Malta, dedicated to saint of the same name. It was constructed at various stages between 1954 and 2005, although the building is still incomplete, lacking bell towers. History The settlement of Santa Venera grew rapidly in the 20th century, and the old parish church became too small to cater for the needs of the inhabitants. Construction of the church began on 19 April 1956, to Romanesque Revival designs of Ġużè Damato. After excavation works, the roofing and the balcony were completed by June 1967. Construction stopped due to a lack of funds, but on 19 March 1969 the crypt under the new church, which had been completed, began to be used as a temporary church. The Old Church of Santa Venera ( mt, Knisja l-Qadima ta' Santa Venera) is a Roman Catholic church in Santa Venera, Malta, dedicated to saint of the same name. It was built between 1658 and 1688 on a site of a 15th-century church. It was the town's parish church from 1918 to 1989, when the parish was transferred to the new Santa Venera Parish Church. History The first church which stood on the site was built in 1473, and it was enlarged in 1500. It was rebuilt between 1658 and 1688. The present configuration of the building dates back to the 19th century. The church was given to the Carmelites on 12 December 1912, and it became a parish church on 4 September 1918. It is located adjacent to a friary and a school. The church became too small to cater for the town's growing population by the mid-20th century, so a storeroom in Château Lonz began to be used as a temporary church in 1947, and a new parish church began to be built in 1954. Casa Leoni or Casa Leone ( mt, Dar l-Iljuni, meaning "House of the Lions"), also known as Palazzo Manoel or the Vilhena Palace ( mt, Il-Palazz Vilhena), is a palace in Santa Venera, Malta, which was built as a summer residence for Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena in 1730. It was subsequently used for a number of purposes, including as an insurgent command base, an official residence, a museum depository and a school. It currently houses the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects (MTIP). Wignacourt Aqueduct
The Wignacourt Aqueduct ( mt, L-Akwedott ta' Wignacourt) is a 17th-century aqueduct in Malta, which was built by the Order of Saint John to carry water from springs in Dingli and Rabat to the newly built capital city Valletta. The aqueduct was carried through underground pipes and over arched viaducts across depressions in the ground. The first attempts to build the aqueduct were made by Grand Master Martin Garzez in 1596, but construction was suspended before being continued in 1610. The watercourse was inaugurated five years later on 21 April 1615. Several engineers took part in the project, including Bontadino de Bontadini, Giovanni Attard and Natale Tomasucci. The aqueduct was named after Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, who partially financed its construction. The aqueduct remained in use until the 20th century.
