Qormi
Qormi ( mt, Ħal Qormi ; pronounced in the Qormi dialect), also known by its title Città Pinto, is a city in the Southern Region of Malta, southwest of Valletta in the centre of the island. It has a population of 16,324 (as of March 2018), making it Malta's fifth-largest city. Its bordering towns are Marsa, Luqa, Żebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Ħamrun, Birkirkara, Attard, Santa Venera and Balzan. Qormi has two parishes, one dedicated to Saint George and one to Saint Sebastian. It contains two valleys: Wied ''il-Kbir'' (The Large Valley) and ''Wied is-Sewda'' (Black Valley). Elder inhabitants of Qormi speak a broad Qormi Dialect, which is now in decline. Etymology The name Qormi is most likely derived from the surname ''Curmi'', which is documented in Sicily as of 1095. Several other places in Malta derive their names from surnames, including Balzan, Attard and Ghaxaq. National Inventory Of The Cultural Property Of The Maltese Islands
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) is a heritage register listing the cultural property of Malta. The inventory includes properties such as archaeological sites, fortifications, religious buildings, monuments and other buildings. The NICPMI is under the responsibility of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which was founded in 2002 to replace the Antiquities Act. The NICPMI was established on 16 December 2011. Parish Church Of St George, Qormi
The Church of St George is a 16th-century baroque Roman Catholic parish church located in Qormi, Malta. History The parish of St George is one of the 12 parishes mentioned in the rollo of Bishop Senatore de Mello in 1436. The church structure was built three times. The original parish church was demolished and a larger one was built on the same site in the mid-15th century. The church was then reconstructed in a larger form around 1585. The dome was added in 1684 on designs by Lorenzo Gafà. The church was consecrated on May 6, 1731. The church was elevated to the status of Collegiate church on 30 June, 2019. St Peter's Chapel, Qormi
The Chapel of St Peter is a Roman Catholic 17th-century church in the village of Qormi in Malta. History The original church was either built in the 15th or 16th century. It was visited by inquisitor Pietro Dusina during his apostolic visit to Malta in 1575. He recounts that the chapel lacked all necessarily things to celebrate service, had no priest and no doors but had one altar. A yearly service in honour of St Peter was celebrated and paid for by the people living nearby. Dusina ordered that all functions in the chapel cease until new doors are installed. Old Church Of St Sebastian, Qormi
The Old Church of St Sebastian ( mt, Il-Knisja l-Qadima ta' San Bastjan), commonly known as ''il-knisja ż-żgħira'' (Maltese for "the small church"), is a Roman Catholic church in Qormi, Malta, dedicated to Saint Sebastian. It was built between 1880 and 1890 near a statue of the saint which had been erected in 1815 to commemorate deliverance from a plague epidemic in 1813. It was a parish church between 1935 and the 1980s, when a larger parish church with the same dedication was built nearby. The building was only formally consecrated in 2019, and it is now used as an adoration chapel. The Parish Church of St Sebastian is a 20th-century Roman Catholic Parish church in Qormi, Malta. Old Chapel The original chapel dedicated to St Sebastian was mentioned in accounts by inquisitor Pietro Dusina on his visit on 2 February 1575.
