Ballingarry Coal Mines
Ballingarry Coal Mines are underground coal mines located near the village of Ballingarry, County Tipperary, Ireland. Situated near the border with County Kilkenny, the mines are now disused and have flooded. Other nearby centres of population are Killenaule and New Birmingham. Geology The type of coal mined here was anthracite, a hard, virtually smokeless fuel with a high calorific value and relatively low ash content. The coalfield is situated in the Slievardagh range of hills and is an extension of the Leinster coalfields, being separated by a narrow band of Carboniferous limestone. The deposits, which are highly faulted, consist of three strata, the lowest averaging nine inches in thickness and the others being approximately two feet thick. Due to the inclined coal layer acting as a slippage plane, substantial amounts of the deposits have been crushed and blended with the upper and lower boundary shale. Deerpark Mines
The Deerpark Mines (), about 3 km north of Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, were the largest opencast coalmines in Ireland, giving great employment to the area. Ballycorus Leadmines
Ballycorus () leadmines is a former lead mining and smelting centre located in the townland of the same name, near Kilternan in County Dublin, Ireland. The mine opened around 1807 and was taken over by the Mining Company of Ireland (MCI) in 1826 who owned and operated the site up until closure in 1913. After the mine was exhausted in the 1860s, Ballycorus continued to operate as a smelting facility receiving ore from other MCI sites such as the mines in Glendalough, County Wicklow. The most distinctive surviving remnant of the site is the ruin of the flue chimney that lies close to the summit of Carrickgollogan hill. Further down the slopes of the hill, many other former buildings and structures from the leadworks can also be found. Galmoy Mine
Galmoy Mine is an abandoned zinc and lead mine northwest of Kilkenny, Ireland. Located in the Rathdowney Trend, Galmoy was an underground mine that operated from 1997 to 2012, initially by Arcon International Resources, then by Lundin Mining from 2005. The Rathdowney Trend stretches , between the towns of Abbeyleix and Thurles. The region is a broad plain drained by the Rossetown and Drish Rivers, tributaries of the River Suir, which flows into the sea at Waterford. Exploration of the Rathdowney Trend during the late 1960s and early 1970s identified sporadic occurrences of lead and zinc, although the first significant mineralisation was not discovered until 1984. Lisheen Mine is also in the Rathdowney Trend. Galmoy was exclusively an underground operation. Lisheen Mine
Lisheen Mine is a former lead-zinc-silver mine located between the villages of Moyne, County Tipperary, Moyne and Templetuohy in County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. In the Rathdowney Trend, Lisheen was an underground mine where the Lisheen deposit lies at an average depth of 170 metres (560 feet) below surface. The mine closed in 2015. Accidents and incidents The Lisheen Mine had two fatal accidents within two years. The first was an explosion in April 2011, and the second occurred on 4 April 2013 when a roof collapsed. In each case, a man died. History The Lisheen Deposit was discovered in April 1990 by Murray Hitzman who at the time was working for Chevron. Tara Mine
Tara Mines is a zinc and lead mine near Navan, County Meath, Ireland. Tara is an underground mine where the orebody lies between 50 and 900 metres below the surface in carbonate-hosted lead-zinc ore deposits. The deposit was discovered in 1970 by Derek Michael Romer while working for Pat Hughes' Northgate Exploration. Development started in 1973 and production began in 1977. Tara Mine is operated by Boliden. It is the largest zinc mine in Europe and the eighth largest in the world producing 200,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 40,000 tonnes of lead concentrate annually. The Mining Company of Ireland (MCI) was a mining company which operated in Ireland, starting in 1824. History The Mining Company of Ireland (MCI) was formed in 1824 by an Act of Parliament following an inaugural meeting of interested philanthropic gentlemen in Dublin on 5 February 1824 in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. The company initially offered four thousand £25 shares, at a maximum of 25 shares per person. MCI purchased Luganure Mine, County Wicklow, and worked it for 66 years. Over this time it yielded 50,000 tonnes of lead and 25,000 ounces of silver. The company also prospected at the copper mine at Ballydehob, County Cork in the 1850s. Irish gold is gold that occurs naturally in areas of Ireland and highly prized because of its origin and scarcity. Ireland was the major area of gold working in the Bronze Age British Isles. Irish gold is especially well known from the Irish Bronze Age as jewellery, in the form of gold lunulae, torcs, gorgets and rings. History The first gold was produced in Ireland c. 2500 BC during the late Neolithic/Atlantic Bronze Age. Sun discs and lunulae were produced from hammered gold.
