Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. Majalli Wahabi
Majalli Wahabi ( ar, مجلي وهبي, he, מגלי והבה, also spelled Majalli Wahbee, born 12 February 1954) is an Druze-Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud, Kadima and Hatnuah between 2003 and 2013. He briefly assumed the position of Israel's Acting President due to President Moshe Katzav's leave of absence and Interim President Dalia Itzik's trip abroad in February 2007, making him the first non- Jew and the first Druze to be Israel's acting head of state. Background Wahabi was born on 12 February 1954 in the Druze village of Beit Jann, Israel. He earned a B.A. in the History of Islam from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an M.A. in the History of the New Middle East from the University of Haifa. Akram Hasoon
Akram Hasson ( ar, أكرم حسون, he, אכרם חסון, born 2 July 1959) is an Israeli Druze politician who served as a member of the Knesset in several spells from 2012 to 2019, first as MK for Kadima between 2012 and 2013, and then as an MK for Kulanu from 2016 to 2019. In 2015, Hasson became Kadima's last leader, marking the first time a Druze had led a Jewish party. Biography After doing his national service in the Israel Defense Forces between 1978 and 1981, Hasson worked as Director of Youth and Sports at a local council. The following year he briefly worked as a teacher in a high school in Daliyat al-Karmel and the prison system, before starting work at a law firm in Haifa. Yuval Tzelner
Yuval Zellner ( he, יובל צלנר, born 2 March 1978) is an Israeli politician. He served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2012 and 2013, and again from 2014 until 2015. Biography Born in Ramat HaSharon, Zellner served in the Paratroopers Recon branch of the Paratroopers Brigade and was seriously wounded during his national service. Between 1999 and 2003 he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earning an LLB as well as simultaneously studying for BA in political science at Tel Aviv University. Between 2003 and 2007 he studied for an MA in political science at Tel Aviv University, and also gained an MBA from the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in 2008. Avi Duan
Avraham "Avi" Duan ( he, אברהם "אבי" דואן, 17 October 1955 – 22 September 2018) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2012 and 2013. Biography Duan grew up in the Ramat Amidar neighbourhood of Ramat Gan and studied for a master's degree in social work and community administration at Bar Ilan University. He worked as a social worker at American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and ran centres for occupational development for Ethiopian immigrants in Ashdod and Rehovot. In 2008 he headed Shaul Mofaz's campaign for the Kadima leadership election. He was placed 33rd on the Kadima list for the 2009 Knesset elections. Dr. Doron Shalom Avital ( he, דורון שלום אביטל, born 22 January 1959) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2011 and 2013. Biography Born in the Brit Ahim youth village near Bustan HaGalil, Avital moved to the Katamon neighbourhood of Jerusalem as a child. During the 1982 Lebanon War he served as commander of Battalion 202. Between 1992 and 1994 he was commander of Sayeret Matkal. Nino Abesadze
Nino Abesadze ( he, נינו אבסדזה; ka, ნინო აბესაძე, born 12 April 1965) is an Israeli politician and journalist who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2009 and 2013. Biography Born in Tbilisi in the Soviet Union (today in Georgia) to a Georgian Christian father and Russian-Jewish mother, Abesadze graduated from the Film School at the Open University of Georgia, before studying for degrees in Russian literature and linguistics at Tbilisi State University. At the age of 23 she began working for Georgian State Television, becoming the presenter of the evening news two years later. Yulia Shamalov-Berkovich ( he, יוליה שמאלוב-ברקוביץ', born 1 April 1964) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2009 and 2013. Biography Born in the Soviet Union, Shamalov-Berkovich made aliyah to Israel in 1979. Between 1983 and 1984 she studied for a certificate in Journalism and Television, before studying for a BA in sociology and anthropology at Tel Aviv University between 1985 and 1988. She later returned to the university to complete an MBA in 1998. She was amongst the founders of Israel Plus, the country's Russian language television channel, and ''Vesti'', its largest Russian-language newspaper. Orit Zuaretz ( he, אורית זוארץ, born 21 February 1967) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima and Hatnuah between 2009 and 2013. Biography Born Svetlana Moiseyevna Chernyak (russian: Светлана Моисеевна Черняк) in the Soviet Union, Zuaretz emigrated to Israel in 1971. Otniel Schneller ( he, עתניאל שנלר, born 28 January 1952) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2006 and 2013. Biography Born in Jerusalem, and raised in Michigan, Schneller took Jewish studies and social science at Bar-Ilan University, finishing his studies in 1978. Between 1983 and 1986 he served as secretary general of the Yesha Council, the body representing Israeli settlers in Gaza and the West Bank. Aryeh Bibi ( he, אריה ביבי, born 28 April 1943) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2009 and 2013. Biography Born in Baghdad in Iraq in 1943, Bibi made aliyah to Israel in 1950. He started his military service in the paratroopers brigade, later serving as commander of the Gaza Strip. He received a BA in the history of Israel. He joined Israel Police, and served as commanding officer of the Yarkon region and Jerusalem, head of the police's general headquarters, and commissioner of the Israel Prison Service between 1993 and 1997. Yisrael Hasson
Yisrael Hasson ( he, ישראל חסון, born 27 April 1955) is an Israeli politician and former Deputy Director of Shin Bet. He served as a member of the Knesset for Yisrael Beiteinu and Kadima between 2006 and 2014, before becoming Chairman of the Israel Antiquities Authority. Biography Hasson was born in Damascus, and made aliyah to Israel at the age of seven.
