The Parliament of the Republic of Fiji is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Fiji. It consists of 55 members elected every 4 years using open list proportional representation in one multi-member nationwide constituency. History Establishment The Fijian Parliament dates from 10 October 1970, when Fiji became independent from the United Kingdom. The Parliament replaced the former colonial legislative body, the Legislative Council, which had existed in various forms throughout the entire colonial period. A grandfather clause in the 1970 Constitution, which was adopted on independence, provided for the old Legislative Council to be renamed as the House of Representatives and remain in office, pending the first post-independence elections in 1972. Josaia Tavaiqia
Ratu Sir Josaia Tavaiqia, KBE (1931 – 17 November 1997) was a Fijian chief and politician, who served as one of two vice presidents of Fiji from 1990 until his death in 1997. (From 1990 to 1999, Fiji had two vice-presidents concurrently). Tavaiqia, who held the chiefly title of ''Tui Vuda,'' or Paramount Chief of Vuda, one of the subdivisions of Ba Province, died on 17 November 1997 at the age of 66. Satendra Nandan is an Indian academic, writer, and politician. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers (India), and is also host of some talk shows. Harilal Manilal Patel (born 1941) is a Fiji Indian lawyer who has also been a member of the House of Representatives of Fiji. Harish Sharma
Harish Chandra Sharma is a Fiji Indian politician who became the leader of the National Federation Party in 1987. He was also the leader of the organisation representing most of the Hindus in Fiji, the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji. Early life Sharma was born in Nausori, Fiji in 1932. He worked as a civil servant and as an insurance agent before departing for Tasmania in 1960, where he received the LL.B. from the University of Tasmania in 1964. Krishna Datt, last name sometimes spelt as ''Dutt'', is a Fijian politician of Indian descent. Datt served as Principal of Suva Grammar School, where he participated in the national teachers' strikes in 1985, which launched his political career with the Fiji Labour Party. Datt was first elected into the House of Representatives in 1987 and was the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Civil Aviation in the Bavadra Government before being deposed by the coup of 1987. He also contested and won the Ba Rural Indian Constituency in the 1994 election. After the present constitutional arrangements came into force in 1999, he represented the Macuata East Open Constituency, one of 25 elected by universal suffrage. Mahendra Chandra Vinod (1922 – 2003) was a Fijian civil servant and editor who was also a member of the House of Representatives of Fiji. He was born in Nacokaika, Naitasiri, Fiji and was of Indian descent. After completing his Bachelor of Science from the University of Hawaii and Diploma in Journalism from New Delhi, joined the Fiji civil service. He retired from the civil service in 1979 and became the editor of the Hindi language newspaper, ''Shanti Dut'' in 1981. In August 1981, he was awarded an Imperial Service Order (ISO) from Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to Fiji. James Shankar Singh, MBE (May 10, 1924 – July 27, 2014) was a Fiji Indian farmer, businessman, social worker and politician who served as a Minister in the Alliance Government of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Like many Fiji Indian politicians of the era, he joined the Alliance Party with a belief in mutiracialism, but was disappointed with the Alliance Party's appeal to Fijian nationalism after 1977 and left the Alliance to join the National Federation Party. Rishi Shankar (1934 - 2015) is a Fiji Indian lawyer who was elected to the House of Representatives of Fiji. He was born in Lautoka, Fiji and was a police officer from 1953 to 1965. He then studied law at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He re-joined the police force on return to Fiji but in 1974 joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. In 1976, he left government service to set up a law firm in Ba. He served as Nadi Town Councillor between 1982 and 1985. Noor Dean is an Indo-Fijian lawyer and politician who served in the Suva City Council and was elected to the House of Representatives of Fiji in 1987. Early life He was born in Suva, Fiji in 1946, the oldest boy in a family of 12. His father, the late Rahmat Dean was a popular architect who designed the Toorak Mosque in Suva. Mahendra Chaudhry
Mahendra Pal Chaudhry ( hif, महेन्द्र पाल चौधरी; born 9 February 1942) is a Fijian politician and the leader of the Fiji Labour Party. Following a historic election in which he defeated the long-time former leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, the former trade union leader became Fiji's first Indo-Fijian Prime Minister on 19 May 1999, but exactly one year later, on 19 May 2000 he and most of his Cabinet were taken hostage by coup leader George Speight, in the Fiji coup of 2000.
