North Carolina Sports Hall Of Fame
The North Carolina Museum of History is a history museum located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. It is an affiliate through the Smithsonian Affiliations program. The museum is a part of the Division of State History Museums, Office of Archives and History, an agency of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. History Frederick Augustus Olds, known as the "father" of the North Carolina Museum of History, began collecting items from across North Carolina in the late 19th century. He eventually traversed all 100 counties, at least once, and acquired not only pieces of the past but also the stories associated with them—starting a philosophy that exists to this day at the museum: using stories to relate the past of North Carolina. Frank Barger
Frank Barger (1921 in China Grove, North Carolina – 1991) was an American high school football coach at Hickory High School in Hickory, North Carolina. A graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, Barger compiled a 273–108–5 record coaching the Hickory Tornadoes, including 3 western state titles and 10 district titles during his 31-year tenure (1953–1984). He was the National Coach of the Year for District 3 (Southeast U.S.) in 1971, and in 1993 was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Elvin Bethea
Elvin Lamont Bethea (born March 1, 1946) is a former American football defensive end who played his entire career with the Houston Oilers. He played for North Carolina A&T State University and was the first person from that school to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2003. Career Bethea was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and played high school football and track at Trenton Central High School. He set the New Jersey state record in the shot put in 1964 – 66 feet 4.5 inches - which stood until 1997. He won the shot put and discus competitions at the Golden West Invitational track meet in 1964. During his career in Houston, Bethea played in 210 games, including a stretch of 135 consecutive. He played at defensive end and guard in the 1968 season and didn't miss a game until breaking his arm in a game against the Oakland Raiders in 1977. Connie Mack Berry
Connie Mack Berry (April 15, 1915 – June 24, 1980) was an American who played professional football, baseball, and basketball. Berry was the center for North Carolina State University's basketball team from 1936 to 1938. He led the Southern Conference in scoring in 1936 and 1937 and won all-conference honors in each of the three years he played. Berry was also a member of NCSU's football team from 1936 to 1938 and baseball team in 1936 and 1937. After graduation, Berry went on to play for the Oshkosh All-Stars (1939–44) and Chicago American Gears (1944–46) of the National Basketball League. Berry played in the National Football League starting in 1939 with the Detroit Lions. In 1940, he played for the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Rams. Walt Bellamy
Walter Jones Bellamy (July 24, 1939 – November 2, 2013) was an American professional basketball player. A four-time NBA All-Star, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. College career Bellamy chose to play basketball at Indiana University. About the experience, he recalled: "In the summer after my junior year of high school I played with some guys from Indiana. Indiana at the time was the closest school to the South that would accept African-Americans. It was an easy transition for me to make. Not that I was naive to what was going on in Bloomington in terms of the times, but it didn't translate to the athletic department or the classroom. Every relationship was good." Bellamy graduated from Indiana University with the most school rebounds in a career with 1,087 in only 70 games, or 15.5 per game. Peggy Kirk Bell
Margaret Anne "Peggy" Kirk Bell (October 28, 1921 – November 23, 2016) was an American professional golfer and golf instructor known for her strong advocacy of women's golf. She was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame, class of 2019, in the lifetime achievement category. Born in Findlay, Ohio, Peggy started playing golf at age 17. She took to the game immediately and quickly won a number of titles. She played college golf at Rollins College. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She played the ladies amateur tour in the 1940s before the development of a professional tour, winning three Ohio Amateurs and the 1949 Titleholders Championship and North and South Women's Amateur. She was also a member of the 1950 U.S. Curtis Cup team. Bobby Lee Bell Sr. (born June 17, 1940) is an American former professional football player who played as an outside linebacker and defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Chiefs' team that won Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings. Jim Beatty
James Tully Beatty (born October 28, 1934 in New York, New York) is a former American track and field athlete and North Carolina politician. He is best remembered as the first person to break the four-minute mile barrier on an indoor track, when he ran 3:58.9 on February 10, 1962, at the Los Angeles Invitational in the Los Angeles Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. He competed in the men's 5000 metres at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Beatty moved to Charlotte, North Carolina with his family when he was four years old. He grew up in the Dilworth neighborhood, delivering for the ''Charlotte Observer'' with his trusted dog "Trigger" for five years. Then focused on boxing, young Beatty would run his paper route to help him train. Glenn Alden Bass (born April 12, 1939) is a former collegiate and professional American football player. He played college football at East Carolina University. A flanker, he played professionally in the American Football League for the Buffalo Bills from 1961 through 1966, and for the Houston Oilers in 1966 and 1967. Bass caught fifty passes for the Bills as a rookie. Henry Smith Barrier Jr. (July 17, 1916 – 2 June 1989) was an American sports journalist. He was the longtime Executive Sports Editor of Greensboro News & Record and served as president of United States Basketball Writers Association from 1970 to 1971. He is a charter member of the United States Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame. In 1999, Barrier was awarded the Basketball Hall of Fame's Curt Gowdy Media Award for outstanding contributions in electronic and print media.
