Academia Brasileira De Letras
The Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) ( English: ''Brazilian Academy of Letters'') is a Brazilian literature, literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on Tuesday, 15 December 1896, with the by-laws being passed on Thursday, 28 January 1897. On Tuesday, 20 July of the same year, the academy started its operation. According to its statutes, it is the pre-eminent Portuguese council for matters pertaining to the Portuguese language. The ABL is considered the foremost institution devoted to the Portuguese language in Brazil. Its prestige and technical qualification gives it paramount authority in Brazilian Portuguese, even though it is not a public institution and no law grants it oversight over the language. Cândido Motta Filho (September 16, 1897 – February 4, 1977) was a Brazilian lawyer, professor, journalist, essayist and politician. Early life He was born in São Paulo, SP, on September 16, 1897, and died in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, on February 4, 1977. He was the son of Cândido Nanzianzeno Nogueira da Mota and Clara do Amaral Mota. His father was a lawyer and professor of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law of São Paulo, and also a senior politician in the State of São Paulo. Raimundo Correia
Raimundo da Mota de Azevedo Correia (May 13, 1859 – September 13, 1911) was a Brazilian Parnassian poet, judge and magistrate. Alongside Alberto de Oliveira and Olavo Bilac, he was a member of the "Parnassian Triad". He founded and occupied the 5th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1897 until his death in 1911. Life Correia was born on a ship anchored in the shores of São Luís, Maranhão, to ''desembargador'' José da Mota de Azevedo Correia and Maria Clara Vieira da Mota de Azevedo Correia. Correia made his secondary course at the Colégio Pedro II, and graduated in Law in 1882, at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo. He would serve as a successful judge in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Bernardo Joaquim da Silva Guimarães (; August 15, 1825 – March 10, 1884) was a Brazilian poet and novelist. He is the author of the famous romances '' A Escrava Isaura'' and '' O Seminarista''. He also introduced to Brazilian poetry the ''verso bestialógico'' (, roughly ''silly verse''), also referred to as ''pantagruélico'' (in a reference to Rabelais's character Pantagruel) — poems whose verses are very nonsensical, although very metrical. Aluísio Azevedo
Aluísio Tancredo Gonçalves de Azevedo (; 14 April 1857 – 21 January 1913) was a Brazilian novelist, caricaturist, diplomat, playwright and short story writer. Initially a Romantic writer, he would later adhere to the Naturalist movement. He introduced the Naturalist movement in Brazil with the novel '' O Mulato'', in 1881. He founded and occupied the 4th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1897 until his death in 1913. Biography Azevedo was born in São Luís, to David Gonçalves de Azevedo (the Portuguese vice-consul in Brazil) and Emília Amália Pinto de Magalhães. José Basílio da Gama (April 10, 1740 – July 31, 1795) was a Portuguese poet and member of the Society of Jesus, born in the colony of Brazil, famous for the epic poem '' O Uraguai''.
