List Of Members Of London County Council 1919–1937
This is a list of councillors and aldermen elected to the London County Council from 1919 to 1937. Councillors 1919–1928 In 1919 triennial elections to the London County Council resumed. The elections due in 1916 had been postponed due to the First World War, and vacancies had been filled by co-option. The size of the council was increased to 124 councillors and 20 aldermen from 1919. The councillors were elected for electoral divisions corresponding to the new parliamentary constituencies that had been created by the Representation of the People Act 1918. Alderman
An alderman is a member of a Municipal government, municipal assembly or council in many Jurisdiction, jurisdictions founded upon English law. The term may be titular, denoting a high-ranking member of a borough or county council, a council member chosen by the elected members themselves rather than by Direct election, popular vote, or a council member elected by voters. Etymology The title is derived from the Old English title of ''ealdorman'', literally meaning "elder man", and was used by the chief nobles presiding over shires. Caroline Ganley
Caroline Selina Ganley, CBE, JP (née Blumfield; 16 September 1879 – 3 August 1966) was an English Labour and Co-operative Party politician. Early life Ganley was born on 16 September 1879 in East Stonehouse, Devon, the daughter of a James Blumfield, a bombardier in the Royal Artillery, and Selina Mary Blumfield. Political career She became politically active in opposition to the Boer War, declaring herself a pacifist, and joined the Social Democratic Federation that year. She actively supported women's suffrage and helped set up what would become the Women's Labour League branch in Battersea. She became involved in the British Committee of the International Congress for Peace and Freedom in 1914. A letter she wrote to the ''Sunday Chronicle'' meant that the wives of servicemen received their allowances through the Post Office. Garnham Edmonds
Garnham Edmonds JP (20 April 1865 – 9 April 1946) was a British butcher and Liberal politician who was both an MP and Mayor of Bethnal Green. Background Edmonds was described as tall, handsome, with a great shock of hair.Forty Years in and out of Parliament by Percy Harris. He had a daughter, Kate E. Rawles, who was awarded the MBE. Professional career Edmonds was a butcher in Bethnal Green, East London, trading as Edmonds and Mears tripe dressers. His butchers shop was located in Bethnal Green Road and sold tripe and offal. After his election to parliament he continued to serve behind the counter and would travel each morning at 6.30am to Smithfield Market to make purchases. He was also a religious and social worker. Edgar Bonham-Carter
Sir Edgar Bonham-Carter (2 April 1870 – 24 April 1956) was a British barrister and administrator in Sudan and Iraq. In his younger days he was a rugby player of some note and represented England at international level. Early life and rugby career Bonham-Carter was born in London, the son of the businessman and lawyer Henry Bonham Carter and his wife Sibella Charlotte (''née'' Norman), and was educated at Clifton College and New College, Oxford, where he took second class honours in jurisprudence in 1892. While at Oxford Bonham-Carter played rugby union for the University team and won two sporting 'Blues' in 1890 and 1891. While still at Oxford he was selected to play for the England national team, in the 1891 Home Nations Championship, against Scotland. This was his only international appearance, but he continued playing rugby after leaving university, joining Blackheath, before turning out for invitational tourists the Barbarians in 1892. Eveline Lowe
Eveline Mary Lowe (29 November 1869 – 30 May 1956) was a British politician. Born in Rotherhithe as Eveline Farren, she attended Milton Mount College and then Homerton College, where she qualified as a teacher. She then began teaching at the college, becoming its vice-principal in 1894 and relocating with the institution to Cambridge. In 1903, she married George Carter Lowe, and left teaching. The two moved to Bermondsey, where George joined the medical practice run by Alfred Salter. Alan Randle
Alan Randle (15 May 1883 – 26 March 1970) was a British medical doctor and politician. Born in the West Ham area of London, England. Randle moved with his family to Otago in New Zealand when only six months old. He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, then studied medicine at University College Hospital in London. He qualified in 1908, and became a surgeon at St Olave's Hospital. During World War I, Randle served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was present at Arras, Ypres and Passchendaele. For his work, he was awarded the Military Cross, and was promoted to become a major. After the war, Randle returned to St Olave's, where he became concerned at the standard of local housing. This led him to join the Labour Party, and at the 1922 London County Council election, he was elected in Rotherhithe. Progressive Party (London)
The Progressive Party was a political party aligned to the Liberal Party that contested municipal elections in the United Kingdom. History It was founded in 1888 by a group of Liberals and leaders of the labour movement. It was also supported by the Fabian Society, and Sidney Webb was one of its councillors. In the first elections of the London County Council (LCC) in January 1889 the Progressive Party won 70 of the 118 seats. John Scott Lidgett
John Scott Lidgett, CH (10 August 1854 – 16 June 1953) was a British Wesleyan Methodist minister and educationist. He achieved prominence both as a theologian and reformer within British Methodism, stressing the importance of the church's engagement with the whole of society and human culture, and as an effective advocate for education within London. He served as the first President of the Methodist Conference in 1932–33. Life He was born in Lewisham, the son of John Jacob Lidgett, a shipowner, and Maria Elizabeth Scott. His maternal grandfather John Scott (1792–1868) was a prominent Wesleyan Methodist, a founder and first Principal of Westminster Training College.
