This is a list of the Mayors of Manly Council, a former local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The official title of Mayors while holding office was: His/Her Worship The Mayor of Manly. First incorporated on 6 January 1877 as the Municipality of Manly, the council met for the first time on 15 February 1877, when the first mayor was elected. The council became known as Manly Council on 1 July 1993 following the enactment of the ''Local Government Act, 1993'' which also stipulated that the term 'Town Clerk' be replaced with 'General Manager' and 'Alderman' be replaced by 'Councillor'. Originally a role nominated by the council annually, from 1995 until abolition in 2016 it was directly elected every four years. His Worship
Worship is an honorific prefix for mayors, Justice of the Peace, justices of the peace and magistrates in present or former Commonwealth realms. In spoken address, these officials are addressed as Your Worship or referred to as His Worship, Her Worship, or Their Worship. In Australia, all states now use His Honour, Your Honour as the form of address for magistrates (the same as has always been used for Judge, judges in higher courts). Alfred Reid (Australian Politician)
Alfred Albert Edward Ernest Theodore Muswellbrooke Orlando Vassa Reid (1867 – 5 August 1945), nicknamed Alphabet Reid, was an Australian politician. He was born in Penrith to Michael and Ann Clara Reid. He became a baker, and in 1898 married Mary Ann Robertson. He served on Penrith Municipal Council from 1895 to 1898 and was mayor in 1898, and after moving to Manly around 1907 served on Manly Council from 1915 and 1928 (mayor from 1919 to 1921). In 1920 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as one of the members for North Shore; he was initially an independent, but subsequently joined the Nationalist Party. He did not stand for election in 1922 and was re-elected in 1925. In 1927, when single-member electorates were re-introduced, he became the member for Manly. Peter Macdonald (Australian Politician)
Peter Alexander Cameron Macdonald OAM (born. 29 May 1943) is an Australian medical practitioner and politician from Glasgow, Scotland. He was formerly the independent member for the Electoral district of Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Mayor of Manly Council. Career Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Macdonald was educated in Edinburgh, the University of London (MB, BS) and King's College Hospital. During this time, he was involved with the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and joined the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, obtaining a Diploma in Anaesthetics (DA) and a Diploma in Obstetrics (DRCOG). Macdonald emigrated to Australia in 1972. He settled in Manly and worked as a general practitioner from 1973 to 2006. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. David Hay (Australian Politician)
David Aberdeen Hay, (born 26 October 1933) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 1991, and state Minister for Local Government and Minister for Planning from 1988 to 1991. Hay was born in Manly and was educated at Manly Boys' High School. He served in the military as a RAAF pilot, and worked as a company director. He was an Alderman of Manly Municipal Council for twenty-three years, including six terms as Mayor and eight as Deputy Mayor, and was also a Mackellar County Councillor for six years, including one year as chairman. In 1984, Hay defeated the Labor member for the seat of Manly, Alan Stewart, and was made Minister for Local Government and Minister for Planning shortly after winning his second term in 1988. Dick Dein
Adam Kemball Dein (1889 – 9 May 1969), known as Dick Dein, was an Australian politician. He was a United Australia Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1931 to 1934, representing the electorate of Lang, and of the Australian Senate for New South Wales from 1934 to 1940. Dein was born at Lucknow, New South Wales and was educated at Shadforth Public School. He left school at 14 and worked as a gold miner and on a dairy farm before training as a teacher in 1907. He taught at Hadsonville and Hanover, Neville, Dubbo and Narromine before moving to Dulwich Hill in Sydney in 1921. In 1926, he was promoted to deputy headmaster of Dulwich Hill Public School. He was heavily involved in local sporting circles, playing both first-grade cricket and tennis for Marrickville. Percy Nolan
Percy Leonard Nolan (1886 – 1954) was an Australian solicitor and mayor of Manly Council. Early life Nolan was born in Queensland, the thirteenth child of Sara Susan (née Holme) and the Rev James Adams Nolan. His father was a Methodist minister and in 1885 president of the NSW and Queensland Methodist Conference. His mother worked for women's suffrage and served as president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. After early years in Queensland, where his father was chairman of the Ipswich Methodist District, Nolan moved with his family to New South Wales. He attended Fort Street High School for one year and then Newington College from 1899 until 1902. Legal career Nolan studied law and served articles with Reginald Cowlishaw, of Robson and Cowlishaw in Sydney. In 1908 he was admitted as a solicitor. Ellison Quirk
Ellison Wentworth Quirk (8 July 186616 November 1938) was a New South Wales politician, Alderman and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing the electorate of Warringah from 1901 to 1904. Early life Quirk was born in 1866 in the town of Lucknow, near Orange, New South Wales on the Wentworth goldfields, the son of Robert Quirk. Quirk grew up in the nearby town of Forbes until the age of 15, when his family settled in Manly in 1881. He eventually established himself within the Manly community as a Storekeeper and Land Agent. He married Margaret Ann Mills on 19 November 1896 and they had two daughters and two sons. Quirk involved himself in local politics at the time and identified himself with the Free Trade Party, not uncommon for members of the Sydney business community at the time.
