Launceston City Council (or City of Launceston) is a Local government in Australia, local government body in Tasmania, located in the city and surrounds of Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston in the north of the state. Allen Hollingsworth
Allen William Hollingsworth (17 October 1894 – 3 June 1954) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly for the Nationalist Party from 9 Jun 1934 until 13 December 1941. He was an alderman of the City of Launceston, and Mayor of the city in 1933–1934, 1946 and 1950. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the son of William Hollingsworth and his second wife, Amelia Airey. William, Amelia and their family of eight children (four daughters from William's first marriage, and one son and three daughters of their own) had left Launceston in January 1893 to join the New Australia colony in Paraguay. They sailed from Sydney on the Royal Tar, with the first group of colonists. The New Australia Colony was formally founded in Paraguay on 28 September 1893. Ivan Dean
Ivan Noel Dean (born 21 April 1945) is an Australian politician. He was an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 2003 to 2021, representing the electorate of Windermere. He also served as Mayor of Launceston from 2005 to 2007. Dean studied at Levendale State School, New Town High School and Charles Sturt University. He also received training at the Tasmania Police Academy and the Victoria Police Academy. Dean worked as a farmer, as an officer in the Australian Army during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and later as a police officer for Victoria Police, New South Wales Police Force and Tasmania Police, where he rose to the rank of Commander before being elected mayor of Launceston, on 31 October 2005. Janie Dickenson
Janie Finlay () is an Australian politician. She was first elected to the Launceston City Council in 2000 and from 2002 to 2005 served as Mayor. When Finlay was elected to that position in February 2002, at age 27, she was the youngest female mayor to serve in Australia. She lost her mayoral position in the October 2005 elections to Ivan Dean by a slim majority after the distribution of preferences. She had been the favourite in her race for a second term, and on 26 October 2005. ''The Examiner'' local newspaper ran a front-page story claiming she was winning by 2000 votes. But by the next day it was revealed Ivan Dean had secured the lead by some 400 votes after preferences. Finlay was, however, re-elected as an alderman, securing more than two quotas. Don Wing
Donald George Wing (born 27 April 1938) is a former Australian politician. A member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 1982 to 2011, representing the electoral division of Launceston (briefly named Paterson), he was President of the Tasmanian Legislative Council, President of the Legislative Council from 2002 until 2008. Wing was also List of mayors of Launceston, Mayor of Launceston from 1983 to 1987. Wing was born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, Ulverstone, and was first elected to the Legislative Council on 22 May 1982. He is a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Tasmania and before entering parliament practised as a barrister. James McGowen (Tasmanian Politician)
James Sinclair Taylor McGowen (25 October 1905 – 9 November 1994) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party of Australia member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1961 to 1964, representing the electorate of Bass. McGowen was born in Newtown in Sydney and was educated at Tempe Technical School. He was the grandson of Labor Premier of New South Wales James McGowen. He moved to Launceston, Tasmania in 1938 and became a retailer there, operating a newsagency, then a clothing store and shoe store. He married Hazel Goss at St John's Church in December 1947. McGowen was a City of Launceston councillor from 1949 to 1966 and mayor from 1958 to 1959. Dorothy Edwards (mayor)
Dorothy Edna Annie Edwards (; 20 June 1907 – 9 March 2006) was an Australian schoolteacher and civic leader. She served as mayor of Launceston, Tasmania, from 1955 to 1957, the first woman to serve as mayor of an Australian city. She was also president of the National Council of Women of Australia from 1960 to 1964 and a long-serving board member of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) and the State Library of Tasmania. Early life Edwards was born on 20 June 1907. She grew up in Deloraine, Tasmania, where her father was the town clerk. She attended Deloraine Primary School and Launceston High School. Sir Norman Henry Denham Henty, KBE (13 October 1903 – 9 May 1978) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served as a Senator for Tasmania from 1950 to 1968. He held ministerial office as Minister for Customs and Excise (1956–1964), Civil Aviation (1964–1966), and Supply (1966–1968). He also served as mayor of Launceston from 1948 to 1949.
