Brandon, Manitoba
Brandon () is the second-largest city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It is located in the southwestern corner of the province on the banks of the Assiniboine River, approximately west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and east of the Saskatchewan border. Brandon covers an area of with a population of 51,313, and a census metropolitan area population of 54,268. It is the primary hub of trade and commerce for the Westman Region as well as parts of southeastern Saskatchewan and northern North Dakota, an area with a combined population of over 180,000 people. The City of Brandon was incorporated in 1882, having a history rooted in the Assiniboine River fur trade as well as its role as a major junction on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Ken Burgess
Kenneth John Burgess (January 5, 1928 – September 10, 2005) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He is the longest-serving mayor of Brandon, Manitoba, having held the position from 1979 to 1989. Burgess was chair of the Brandon school board in the late 1960s. He ran for the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in the 1973 municipal election as a candidate of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was defeated by New Democratic Party incumbent Leonard Evans in the division of Brandon East. Burgess was first elected Mayor of Brandon in a 1979 by-election. He was returned by acclamation in 1980, and was re-elected in 1983 and 1986. Burgess was often involved in disagreements with the federal government over the subsidy for Brandon's airport. David K. Burgess (born c. 1959) is a politician in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, who was mayor of the city from 2002 to 2010. His father, Ken Burgess, was Mayor of Brandon from 1979 to 1989. Early life and career Burgess was born as raised in Brandon. He was the Mayor of Brandon, Manitoba, from 1997 to 2002 and campaigned for the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in 2003. Rick Borotsik (born September 8, 1950) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served as Mayor of Brandon from 1989 to 1997, was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1997 to 2004, and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in 2007. Borotsik is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. Early life and career Borotsik was born to a Ukrainian family in Brandon, was raised in that city, and graduated from Brandon University in 1971. He was elected to the Brandon City Council in 1977 and served for three terms before standing down in 1985. He joined the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 1978. Borotsik sought the provincial PC party's nomination for Brandon West in the buildup to the 1986 provincial election, but lost to Jim McCrae. Jimmy Creighton
James Albert Creighton (November 18, 1905 – May 29, 1990) was an ice hockey player and politician from Brandon, Manitoba. Creighton played eleven games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Falcons in 1931, scoring one goal and receiving one minor penalty. He was traded to the New York Americans in December 1931, but never played for the team. He later worked in the IHL and the Can-Am Leagues. Creighton became a professional hockey referee after retiring as a player, and later worked as a general insurance salesman. He served as an alderman in Brandon in 1946, 1948 and 1949, and was mayor of the city from 1952 to 1955 and from 1958 to 1961. Creighton won the Liberal-Progressive nomination for Brandon City in the 1953 provincial election, defeating W.A. Wood and J.C. MacDonald at a contested meeting. Thomas Mayne Daly
Thomas Mayne Daly, (August 16, 1852 – June 24, 1911) was a Canadian politician. Born in Stratford, Canada West (now Ontario), the son of Thomas Mayne Daly (1827–1885) and Helen McLaren (Ferguson) Daly, his father was a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Perth North. His grandfather, John Corry Wilson Daly, was the first mayor of Stratford. He was educated as a lawyer and was called to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1876. He practised law in Stratford until 1881. In 1881, he moved to Brandon, Manitoba and practised law in partnership with George Robson Coldwell. In 1882, he was elected the first mayor of Brandon. During his first six-month term, Daly initiated a civic development program which allowed for raising $150 000 through debentures. He resigned as Mayor in December 1882. Leslie McDorman
Leslie Hill McDorman (January 19, 1879 – May 19, 1966) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1945 to 1949 as a Liberal-Progressive. He was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1945 provincial election, representing the constituency of Brandon. He was born in Great Village, Nova Scotia and came to Brandon, Manitoba around 1901. McDorman was mayor of Brandon from 1944 to 1945. McDorman's won the seat as the result of a local division in the Cooperative Commwealth Federation. Dwight Johnson had previously been elected for Brandon as a CCF candidate in a 1943 by-election, but was suspended from the party on suspicions of holding communist sympathies. George Dinsdale
George Dinsdale (August 14, 1887 in Leven, East Riding of Yorkshire, England – September 21, 1943) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served as a Conservative representative in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1932 until his death. The son of George Dinsdale and Harriet Catherick, Dinsdale was educated at Rise, a village about three miles south-east of Leven, and came to Canada in 1904. He first farmed in Ontario and came west in 1906, settling on a homestead at Craik, Saskatchewan. Dinsdale moved to Brandon, Manitoba later that year. He served six years as an alderman in Brandon, Manitoba, and was the city's mayor in 1920 and 1921. Dinsdale was also the owner of Dinsdale Cartage, and was a member of the Salvation Army.
