Manhua
() are Chinese-language comics produced in China and Taiwan. Whilst Chinese comics and narrated illustrations have existed in China in some shape or form throughout its imperial history, the term first appeared in 1904 in a comic titled ''Current Affairs Comics'' () in the Shanghai-based newspaper ''Jingzhong Daily'' (). Etymology The word was originally an 18th-century term used in Chinese literati painting. It became popular in Japan as ''manga'' in the late 19th century. Feng Zikai reintroduced the word to Chinese, in the modern sense, with his 1925 series of political cartoons entitled ''Zikai Manhua'' in the ''Wenxue Zhoubao'' (Literature Weekly). While terms other than had existed before, this particular publication took precedence over the many other descriptions for cartoon art that were used previously and came to be associated with all Chinese comic materials. ''Chinese Hero: Tales of the Blood Sword'' is a ''wuxia'' manhua series created by Hong Kong artist Ma Wing-shing. It is also referred to as ''Blood Sword'', ''Blood Sword Dynasty'', ''A Chinese Hero: Tales of the Blood Sword'' and ''A Man Called Hero''. Background The artwork and drawing style of ''Chinese Hero'' is responsible for the modern characteristics of manhua. It was a breakthrough in terms of using high levels of details, realistic style, clear cut action scenes and skillful use of color in combination with an engrossing plot. McMug () is an anthropomorphic pig cartoon character from Hong Kong featured in manhua, comic strips, TV shows, and films. McMug first appeared in 1988, as the central character of a comic strip printed in the Ming Pao weekly magazine. McMug is drawn by cartoonist Alice Mak (cartoonist), Alice Mak (麥家碧), with stories written by Brian Tse (writer), Brian Tse (謝立文). Andy Seto (; born 3 June 1969) is a comic artist who specialises in martial-arts based stories. Biography Seto's works include his main series, "Cyber Weapon Z." He has also drawn a graphic novel adaptation of the earlier Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon novels, the King of Fighters series, and also created a graphic novelisation of Stephen Chow's film, Shaolin Soccer. Cyber Weapon Z () is a manhua series adapted into a 3D- CG Chinese animation TV series in Hong Kong. Background In 1990 Andy Seto joined the Freeman publication label, where he took on drawing manhua and other comics. In 1993 he started the 10 volume Cyber Weapon Z manhua series with writer Chris Lau in Hong Kong. The story also ran as a 3D animation series in 1995. Though much of the success did not begin until a French comic company, Tonkam, republished the comic in Europe where it became more popular. Andy's style is heavily influenced by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who animated Venus Wars is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Lau joined the comics business field as a comics assistant in 1985, and became an artist in 1988 with his first work "Anti-ROCK" in ''Comics For City People''. ''Feel 100%'' ( Chinese: 百分百感覺) is a popular Hong Kong comic book series written by Lau Wan Kit (劉雲傑) and Yau Ching Yuen ( 游清源). Its popularity has resulted in various adaptations on film and television. To this date there are 4 movies and 1 TV series. As this comic book is for a Cantonese audience, the dialogue is in the more vernacular written Cantonese, rather than the standard written Chinese. Lee Chi Ching (; born 1963) is a Hong Kong manhua illustrator with the pen name "清兒". Lee began drawing comics and graphic novels in 1981. In 1992, he won an award for his watercolors at the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial and had his work housed at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. He is the first cartoonist from Hong Kong to have his work published in Japan. His speciality is in historical manga, usually based on pre-existing classic novels, including the works of ''wuxia'' writer Louis Cha.
