Claig Castle
Claig Castle was a stronghold of the Clan Donald or MacDonald in the south of Scotland. History The castle was once a massive fort described as a ''sea fortress'', which allowed the Macdonald Lord of the Isles to dominate and control the sea traffic north and south through the Hebrides for more than four centuries. The castle remained a stronghold of the MacDonalds until they were subdued in the 17th century by the Clan Campbell. Scarba
Scarba ( gd, Sgarba) is an island, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, just north of the much larger island of Jura. The island was owned by Richard Hill, 7th Baron Sandys, and has not been permanently inhabited since the 1960s. It is now covered in heather and used for grazing animals. Kilmory Lodge is used seasonally as a shooting lodge, the island having a flourishing herd of red deer. Ardfin
Ardfin is a country estate on the island of Jura, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. It is situated at the southern tip of the island, between Feolin and Craighouse. It includes Jura House which is a Category C listed building. The old house was extended by architect William Burn in 1838 for the laird Colin Campbell, with further extensions in 1878 by Alexander Ross and circa 1900 by Ronald Carswell. The next owners from 1938 were the Riley-Smith family, owners of John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. The estate was sold in 2010 after the death of Tony Riley-Smith. Lagg, Jura
Lagg is a hamlet on Lagg Bay, on the east coast of the island of Jura, in the council area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is on the A846 from Craighouse. Lagg consists of two main areas, Lagg township, above a steep slope from the bay, away from the coastal edge. The former inn is the other. Craighouse
Craighouse ( gd, Taigh na Creige) is the main settlement and capital of the Scottish Inner Hebridean island of Jura, in Argyll and Bute. In 1971 it had a population of 113. The village is situated on the sheltered east coast of the island at the southern end of Small Isles Bay. Since 2007, a passenger-only ferry service between Craighouse and Tayvallich on the Scottish mainland has operated during the summer months. This service was resurrected by the community after several decades without a direct mainland ferry. Vehicular access to the island now via a small ferry between Feolin on Jura ( south of Craighouse via road) and Port Askaig on neighbouring Islay.
